6 Stages in Building Educational Equity in the Curriculum 1.Complying with the letter of the law 2.Neutralizing Stereotypes and Bias in existing instructional materials, course content, the classroom environment and teaching methods. 3.Revising existing curriculum to attract and meet the interests, needs, and learning supports of diverse students 4.Developing new curriculum content to attract and meet the needs of diverse students and to provide instruction relevant to future workforce success.

Review course content, instructional materials and environment for stereotypes and bias based on sex (and other protected groups) Review Instructional Methods used and research methods that support learning and comfort for all students. Language and respectful communication Skills USA/CTSO activities and leadership

Revising existing curriculum to attract and meet the interests, needs, and learning supports of diverse students Target females in recruitment strategies by increasing their knowledge of opportunities and their confidence in their abilities to succeed. Provide female role models, at the next educational level up and from local employers. Ensure environment is safe, clean, filled with images portraying diverse students and workers. Practice instructional methods and learning supports that remove barriers for females and extend their learning.

10 4. Developing new curriculum content to attract and meet the needs of diverse students. Adding courses to the course offerings that are specifically designed to attract females. This can be done in co-ed classrooms This can be done with a rigorous curriculum, not watered down curriculum. Courses must build a foundation for additional career-related courses and programs of study. Ongoing teacher effort to manage climate/environment. content, projects/activities, and instruction to achieve inclusive results and avoid gender-related barriers Ongoing teacher efforts to apply gender awareness of learning barriers and self-defeating self perceptions. 11 Beware the Paradox In reaching out to the nontraditional student, a troublesome paradox occurs. In order to attract students, educators identify and reach out to them based on their CURRENT interests which are frequently based on stereotypes or biases. Without care our efforts will reinforce and perpetuate gender and career stereotypes.
