Action 1: Challenge Violence Against Women Challenge attitudes, beliefs, behaviours, systems and practices that justify, excuse, trivialise or downplay violence against women, or shift blame away from the perpetrator For example: Have a voice! Weigh in on public debate Set the standard at your workplace or club – and take action against sexist jokes and language, build a culture of respect and equality

Action 2: Empower Women This means: Equalising access to power and resources by strengthening women’s economic security and participation Challenge men’s use of controlling behaviours Promote networks for peer support Advocate broadly for fairness and equality For example: Consider the impact of unconscious bias on recruitment/ selection/advancement processes Provide mentoring and leadership networks for women Ensure all policies and practices reflect fairness and equality Publicly state your commitment to fairness and equality

Action 3: Challenge Stereotypes This means: Reject rigid gender roles and stereotypes that are restrictive and perpetuate power imbalances (especially those that support ideas of masculinity being aggressive and dominant and femininity as being subordinate and sexualised) Encourage gender equitable norms – particularly around domestic and parenting practices, and occupational choices For example: Audit all practices, policies and marketing etc to ensure you are building positive personal identities, and not unintentionally reinforcing stereotypes – and modify where needed

Action 4: Build Respectful Relationships This means: Challenge ideas that relationships between men and women are oppositional Promote positive, equal and respectful relationships in all contexts For example: Model positive, equal and respectful ways of communicating in all facets of your organisation

Action 5: Promote Gender Equality This means Assess all public policy for its impact on women and ensure it is promoting and normalising equality Increase social and structural support for equality For example: Ensure the development and review of all policy, programs and initiatives includes a step that assesses its impact on women and its impact on ensuring access to opportunities are equal for women and men

These actions lay the foundation for a way forward – concrete things we can do that will, as we start to change our culture, prevent violence against women, but we need collective action, we need many of us to work towards this single vision, to really make a difference
