Mobile and Flexible Industrial Processing of Biomass, MOBILE FLIP

2 Main objectives  Develop technologies for simple and robust processes that are applicable to small scale. The specific aims of the project are to demonstrate at least three of the following technologies as a mobile unit  biomass pre-treatment steps (comminution, drying, fractioning)  hydrothermal treatment and saccharification  hydrothermal carbonization  torrefaction  slow pyrolysis  feasible compaction technologies for solid products (pelletizing and briquetting)

3 Approach WP 2 - Experimental evaluation of process flexibility and product quality (leader CEA)  Task 1. Raw material procurement and characterisation (leader FCBA)  Task 2. Process lines based on pelletization (leader SLU)  Task 3. Process lines based on hydrothermal treatment and saccharification (leader VTT)  Task 4. Process lines based on torrefaction, including evaluation of products (leader CEA)  Task 5. Process lines based on slow pyrolysis (leader VTT) Sustainability, feasibility and social aspects WP6 - Management (leader VTT) Technical performance WP 5 - Dissemination and exploitation (leader FCBA) WP 1 - Business feasibility evaluation (leader SP) WP 4 - Sustainability evaluation (leader VTT) WP 3 - Mobile plant design and demonstration (leader BioGold)

4 Mobile Flip in figures  Budget:9.77 million euros  Resources:762 Personmonths  Duration:4 years (2015 – 2018)  Partners:2 large companies, 4 SMEs and 6 research institutes & universities  From5 EU member countries  ProgrammeSPIRE-02-2014 Adaptable industrial processes allowing the use of renewables as flexible feedstock for chemical and energy applications  ContactsCoordinator: tarja.tamminen@vtt.fi

5 Original consortium SMEs RTOs Large companies

6 Consortium evolution (under negotiation with EU) SMEs RTOs Large companies

7 Expected impacts Technological  Development of mobile advanced technological solutions to valorize locally unexploited biomasses resources, while minimizing final waste production and integrating energy management and efficiency in operating processes.  Upgrade of forest-based products not used for other usages (low diameter stem wood chips, low-diameter trees, branches, trees tops, eventually leaves left in forest after exploitation, stumps, etc)  Upgrade of agricultural residues, green leaves at farms, residues from food processing industry

8 Expected impacts Economic/Social  New business based on local usage of co-products of forest- and agriculture-based industries  Local (non delocalizable) jobs created in rural areas  Business opportunities for local SMEs in the production chain generally controlled by big companies  Reduced need for transportation due to enrichment of valuable biomass components  Integration to existing process, reduction in needs for external energy, green feedstock for existing industry

9 Expected impacts Environmental  Carbon valorized as molecules or materials instead of only energy source and CO 2 release  Reduce the use of fossil energy in particular for transportation due to increased energy density and/or only interesting fractions  Replacement of toxic, fossil-based chemicals (ex. phenol by a renewable raw materials for pannels).  Add value to waste (forest and agriculture by-products, food industry residues, demolition wood, etc)  Substitution of non-renewable soil fertilizers by the HTC biochar  Biobased diseases/pests controls agents issued from HTC liquid fraction
