3 What is Stress? Stress is your mind and body’s response or reaction to a real or imagined threat, event or change 3

5 Stressors Stress can be caused by: Work Family Relationships Finances Health/illness Environment Living Situation 5

6 Is STRESS good or bad for us ? Some amount of stress is essential for us to excel in life. This is good stress or “Positive stress”. But when stress is too much then it reduces performance. This is bad stress or “Negative stress”. 6

7 Positive Stress 7 Positive stress occurs when your level of stress is high enough to motivate you to move into action to get things accomplished.

8 Negative stress 8 Negative stress occurs when your level of stress is either too high or too low and your body and/or mind begin to respond negatively to the stressors.

9 Negative Effects of Stress 1. Physical - Weight gain/loss - Unexpected hair loss - Heart palpitations - High blood pressure 2. Emotional - Mood swings - Anxiety - Can lead to depression Can also lead to unhealthy coping strategies (i.e. alcohol, drugs, etc) 9

10 Symptoms of stress Physical Indicators lack of enthusiasm for family, school, work or life in general withdrawal change in eating habits insomnia anger fatigue. 10

11 Symptoms of Stress Cognitive( Mental) Indicators include: l Feeling low l Being easily upset l Poor self confidence l Low esteem l Lack of concentration l nightmares 11

12 More symptoms Emotional indicators include: l tearfulness l fear l anxiety l panic l guilt l agitation l depression 12

14 STRESS RELIEF STRATEGIES GET PHYSICAL 1. Relax neck and shoulders 2. Take a stretch 3. Get a massage 4. Healthy food habits 5. Exercise GET MENTAL 6. Count to 10 7. Control your thoughts 8. Congratulate yourself 9. Ignore the problem if appropriate 10. Talk to a counselor 14

15 STRESS RELIEF STRATEGIES GET SPIRITUAL 10. Meditate 11. Pray 12. Remember your purpose USE YOUR BODY AND MIND TOGETHER 13. Take a break 14. Try to relax 15. Try yoga 16. Try aroma therapy 17. Laugh DEVELOP NEW SKILLS 18. Prioritize daily tasks 19. Learn something new everyday 20. Practice a hobby 15
