Chapter 6: The Binomial Distribution and Related Topics 6.1 – Introduction to Random Variables and Probability Distributions 6.2 – Binomial Probabilities 6.3 – Additional Properties of the Binomial Distibution

Focus Problem “Personality Preference Types: Introvert or Extrovert?” Read page 205-206 in text book

6.1 – Introduction to Random Variables and Probability Distributions Statistical Experiment is any process by which measurements are obtained. For example: Counting the number of A's on a test Measuring the heights of people in class Counting the number of defective cameras made at a factory Measuring the rainfall each day in inches

Random Variables Discrete can only be a finite number of values (countable) the number of A's on a test the number of defective cameras made at a factory number of oil wells drilled Continuous can take on any of the countless number of values on a line interval; can be decimals (measurable) the heights of people in class the rainfall each day in inches the volume of cylinders

Guided Exercise #1 As whole group, turn to page 207 – Look-over answers – Whole group clarification

Vocabulary A random variable has a probability distribution whether it is discrete or continuous Probability distribution: assignment of probabilities to the specific values OR to a range of values Features of the probability distribution of a discrete random variable: 1.has a probability assigned to each value of the random variable 2.Sum of all the assigned probabilities must be 1.

Guided Exercise #2 As whole group, turn to page 209-210 – Cover answers – Whole group clarification

More Vocabulary

Guided Exercise #3 As whole group, turn to page 212 – Cover answers – Whole group clarification

Checkpoint  Distinguish between discrete and continuous random variables  Graph discrete probability distributions  Compute mean and standard deviation for a discrete probability distribution

Homework Read Pages 206-213 – Take notes on what we have not covered Do Problems – Page 213-216 (1-10) odds Check odds in back of book Read and preload 6.2 information – Notes/vocab
