Obey Your Thirst! Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

John 7:37-39 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” c 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. c

From the beginning a.Genesis 1:2 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” b.Genesis 6:3 “Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years."

Great Works That Advance God’s Will a.Genesis 41:38 So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” b.Daniel 4:8 … (He is called Belteshazzar, after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods is in him.) c.1 Samuel 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. i.1 Samuel 18:14 “In everything he did he had great success, because the Lord was with him.”

Creativity and Building a.Exodus 31: 1-6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— (v1-3) b.1Chronicles 28:11-12 “Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord…” c.Haggai 2:4-5 “…Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’ i.Zechariah 4:6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty

Lead God’s People a.Numbers 11:1-17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone. (v17) b.Nehemiah 9:20 “You gave your good Spirit to instruct them.” c.Numbers 27:18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership and lay your hand on him. d.Nehemiah 9:30 “For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets.” e.Micah 3:8 But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.

Deliverance of God’s People a.Judges 3:9-10 “But when they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel …The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war.” b.Judges 6: 34 Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon…” c.Samson 13:25, 14:6, 19, 15:14

Promise of the Holy Spirit a.Joel 2:28-29 And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. b. John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. c.John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.” d.John 16:7 “…Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

What Now?

Is He in you? Romans 8:9 “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you— unless, of course, you fail the test?”

Indwelling v. Being Filled With the Holy Spirit

Indwelling of the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 1 Corinthians 6:19 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” Romans 8:10 “But if Christ is in you…” Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

The indwelling is a seal of ownership 2 Corithians1:21-22 “Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” Ephesians 1:13-14 “…When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit Ephesians 5:18 “Instead, be filled with the Spirit…” o Filled comes from the Greek word Pleroursthe which is broken down into pleroo  Pressure- Wind pressuring a vessel across the sea  Permeation- Alka Seltzer  Domination- Total Control

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit Galatians 5:25 “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Colossians 3:16 “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit…”

Questions For Reflection Do I want to be led by the Holy Spirit? What do I fear more, disappointing people or quenching the Holy Spirit? Do I fear what the Holy Spirit will tell me to do? What would God’s kingdom look like if everyone imitated my commitment?

Homework on the Holy Spirit Romans 8 (whole chapter) 1 Corinthians 2:6-3:4 1 Corinthians 12 (whole chapter) Galatians 5:16-6:10 Ephesians 4:30-32 and 5:15-21 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 The whole book of Acts
