Newton’s laws of motion, Momentum, & Projectile Motion (pages 41- 57)  In 1686 Sir Isaac Newton published his book Principia which had 3 laws that relate forces to the motion of objects.  His 3 laws are known as Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion.

Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion “ An object at rest stays at rest or an object that is moving at a velocity or speed in a straight line keeps moving at that velocity or speed unless another force acts on it. “ ….sometimes called the law of inertia

What is Inertia?  Inertia= the tendency of all objects to resist any change in motion.

Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion “ The amount of force needed to make an object changes its speed depends on the mass of the object and the acceleration required. “ Formula Force= mass X acceleration a= 9.8 m/s/s F = m X a

Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion  An object’s acceleration decreases as its mass increases. (move something slowly, feels heavier)  An objects acceleration increases as its force on it increases. (push something harder it will move)

Newton’s 3 rd Law of Motion “ For every action (or force), there is an equal and opposite action ( or force). “ - Forces act in pairs (action, reaction pairs)
