Warm-Up Continue to write the setting paragraph for the prompt from yesterday (spending a day in your favorite book, movie, TV show, video game). When Where Sensory details Mention the problem

Example 1 It was a chilly afternoon in October. There was exactly one week until Halloween. All of the people had their decorations and costumes. I live in a middle class home in Tennessee, not very big, just a little country house on a farm that was built in the early 1900s. My family was out when I was watching television. The reporter was talking about a weird disease that made people super-violent.

The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss. She lives in district 12. She has to go into the woods and fight a whole bunch of other teenagers to the death. She doesn’t want to do this, but she does it because she has to. Some of the other kids enjoy fighting each other, though.

Objective Write the “Character” paragraph for our speculative/narrative writing stories Use vivid language and sensory description

Characters

Reasons to Describe Your Characters More interesting to read Easier to imagine what’s going on in your story More interesting for you to write

Physical Qualities Height/weight Hair/eye color How they dress Hair style Neat/messy Defining marks (scars, tattoos)

Personality Emotions (happy, sad, angry, etc.) How do they treat other people? How do they act toward the problem?

How do they act? How do they carry themselves? (Nervous, guilty, confident, etc) Do they speak a certain way? (Loud, quiet, accent, deep) What do they do?

You MUST Have dialogue (but not too much) Describe them Give them a name

Example My brother Zeke and I were walking behind the house to get some logs for the fireplace. Zeke is only sixteen years old, but he looks like he’s twenty. I’m twenty-eight, but I look a lot younger, or so people tell me. Both of us have dark blond hair, but his is a lot shaggier. If it’s wet, it makes him look like a dog after it’s been in the lake. He shakes it dry just like that too. Suddenly, Zeke froze in his tracks and looked terrified. “Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked, starting to get scared.

Classwork Describe (in bullet form) the following categories for your characters. 1.Physical Appearance 2.Personality 3.How they act 4.Give them a line of dialogue 5.Use a simile to describe them (like… as…)

Directions You are now going to write the second paragraph of your story (about the characters). Make sure you do the following: Describe your character (physical qualities and personality) Include a line of dialogue (Spongebob said, “_______.” Use a simile (Mr. T’s hair is spiky like a porcupine.”

Closing Switch papers with your partner. Read their 2nd paragraph. Tell Mr. T something you found out about their character.
