UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF VERNIER TECHNOLOGY AND TOOLS PART 1: INTRODUCTION – GETTING TO KNOW LABQUEST Vernier Equipment

Why use Vernier or Computer Based Labs? Stanford Kuo Lab Experience Using Technology to Focus on Data Providing Hands-On Experience Moving Towards 21 st Century Skills in Classroom

What can you do with Vernier? Gather and Log Data Analyze, Plot, Graph Data Utilizing Technology and Applications Building on Inquiry Model

Why use computer based lab equipment?

Tools

Navigating Main Menu Here is what the home screen looks like. Can navigate via three different options.  Front panel buttons  Fingertips  Stylus (plastic pen stored on back of unit)

Built-In Applications Built in Applications Labquest App – This is the one used in conjunction with the probes. Power Amplifier – Used for generating electronic signals Audio Function Generator – Used for creating different tones at different frequencies

Built-In Applications Built in Applications Periodic Table – Table of elements Stopwatch – Timer Sound Recorder – Records sound using built in or external mic

Built-In Apps Periodic Table

Built-In Apps Stopwatch

Built-In Probe/Sensors Thermometer

Viewing Modes for LabQuest App Speedometer Icon – Displays current reading of sensor Graph Icon – Displays graph of measured data (typically is measured against time) Chart Icon – Displays chart of data in table format Speedometer icon Graph Icon Chart Icon

Recording Data Tapping the “Play” icon Play Icon

Analyzing Data Tangent - This will draw a tangent line and display the slope for a particular point on graph Select checkboxSlope value

Analyzing Data Integral- This will integrate (sum up) the value underneath your curve (graph line). Select checkbox Area under curve Numerical value of area

Analyzing Data Statistics- This will provide statistical data of you graph on the right hand side of the screen. You can scroll through it by tapping on the arrows on the screen with your stylus. Select checkbox Use scroll icons to see further values

Analyzing Data Curve Fit - * For future experiments, select the model that best represents your data.  Pick one of the curve options. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) value at bottom right determines how far off you are. This value should be as small as possible for the most precise curve fit formula. Select checkbox Choose Fit (linear) RMSE

End Questions? Thank you for participating.
