7 What is a eating disorder?  A disease that involves an unhealthy concern with one’s body weight and shape.  Cause: –Emotional factors  Self-Esteem  Body Image –How you feel and see your body –Unhealthy eating behavior

8 Why would you develop an eating disorder? 1.Low Self-Esteem 2.Fear of becoming overweight 3.Poor Skills for coping with stress 4.Unhealthy body image 5.Pressure from friends and/or family to be thin 6.Feelings of helplessness

9 Signs of an Eating Disorder 1.Dieting 2.Pretending to eat 3.Hiding or throwing away food 4.Exercising for long periods of time 5.Constantly talking about or worrying about food 6.Wearing thick or baggy clothes to hids a very thin body 7.Always complaining about the way that he or she looks

10 Unhealthy Eating Behaviors  Affect a person’s ability to learn  Disrupt growth and development  Over exercising

11 Anorexia Nervosa  An eating disorder that involves –Self-starvation –An unhealthy body image –Extreme weight loss.

12 Anorexia Nervosa  Symptoms 1.Dry, dull hair and hair loss 2.Dry Skin 3.Brittle Nails 4.Large weight loss in short period of time 5.Abnormal pain 6.Growth of fine body hair 7.Feel cold all the time 8.Feels faint or light headed

13 Bulimia Nervosa  An eating disorder in which a person eats a large amount of food and then tries to remove the from their body  Binge Eat  Then throw up everything they just ate

14 Bulimia Nervosa  Symptoms 1.Spend a lot of time thinking about food 2.Steal Food 3.Make themselves throw up after eating 4.Hide food in strange places 5.Exercise excessively  This puts a LOT of stress on the body

15 GET HELP  Compassion  Find someone you trust and that you can talk to about anything
