Building Energy Modelling A look through using Energy Simulation By Tejas Deshmukh 11bcl064

Introduction Energy modelling and simulation is needed to assess the energy use of a building and to quantify the savings attributable to the proposed design. In many cases, architects and building owners are inexperienced with energy modelling and don’t know how to harness this powerful tool to inform the design and decision-making process. Properly used, energy modelling and simulation can help optimize the building design and allow the design team to prioritize investment in the strategies that will have the greatest effect on the building’s energy use.

Building Energy Modelling Energy modeling, or simulation, is the practice of using computer- based programs to model the energy performance of an entire building or the systems within a building. A whole-building modeling provides valuable information about the building and system energy use as well as operating costs.

eQUEST eQUEST is a sophisticated, yet an easy-to-use building analysis tool. It is a tool which actually lets us perform and experience state-of-the art building design and modelling. The best part of the software is …….

It is an OPEN SOURCE software

The process of Modelling / Simulation The process of building modelling/simulation involves the following processes: Conceptual Design Schematic Design Design Development Construction Document

Conceptual Design This is the stage where brainstorming of the building model is done. All the parameters to be taken into consideration are put on the table. Many modelers are reluctant to build such a model with so many things unknown. Yet, good modelers with some professional experience can quickly yield a model which isn’t perfectly accurate but adequate for comparing different scenarios.

Schematic Design During schematic design, energy modeling allows those involved in the design process to optimize their focus on the most promising energy-saving strategies. Seeing how the energy consumption of a building breaks down by fuel type, task, and building component allows the design team to focus on the major drivers of energy use.

Design Development During design development, energy modeling permits parametric studies to be done. A series of simulations are done in which one component of energy use is set to zero at a time. When the results are viewed, a clearer picture of how the building uses energy emerges.

Construction Document During the construction document phase, energy modeling allows comparison of the proposed design to the minimally code-complaint base- case building. This is the document for which the software was actually created. A complete analysis of the building energy consumption pattern is given in this document

Case Study The building taken into consideration is a prototype of GMDC exhibition hall, Ahmedabad. The dimensions of this building are 108 x 48 m.

Conclusion When the door type is changed from steel hollow core flush to wood hollow core flush, and when roof sky lighting position is changed from perimeter to the core, there is an increase in the electricity consumption of the building.
