2 Situation Families often like to test their skill and play competitive games between themselves. They are always looking for new ways that they can have fun and enjoy watching or taking part in skill games. Problem A device is needed that will test a persons skill hand/eye coordination level incorporating electronics to give a fun experience with some challenge and feedback

3 Brief I am going to design and make a device to allow families to test each others fine motor skills by creating an eye / hand coordination electronics game. Constraints My project will be made in 40 hours in school. I will make the project using a Printed circuit board and make a case using CAD CAM.

4 How Electronic Games Work Traditional games similar to Operation include a very simple electronic circuit. There is a bulb located on a patients nose and a buzzer inside the casing. The circuit is made between a battery, tweezers and a metal case in order to light up the bulb and sound the buzzer to indicate that you have touched. When the player takes the tweezers out then the light and sound stops

5 The body part is then put back in and the opponent who holds a corresponding Specialist card has a go for a higher fee. The player with the most money after all the completed operations wins. Instructions 'Doctor' cards instruct players which part of Sam's portly body to operate on. If you are successful, you get paid. If you fail (by touching the metallic sides of the body cavity with the tweezers) Sam's nose lights up and a noisy buzzer goes off.

6 Package contents: 1 plastic gameboard base. 1 cardboard "patient" gameboard with perforated metal sheet. 1 battery unit with red "nose" light and tweezers connected by wiring. 1 plastic frame containing 11 "spare" parts. 1 rubber band. 2 buttons. 24 Operation cards. Money in denominations of 50 and 200. Simple Product Specification Requires 2 x AA batteries (not supplied). For ages 6 and up. Suitable for 2 or more players.

8 Developing the Product Idea Purpose The purpose of my game will be to detect a touch of the tweezers and warn the players by giving off a sound. The player will however have 3 or more lives in order to be more successful before the buzzer sounds indicating the end of their ‘go’. Many other types of electronic games have ‘lives’, or ‘chances’ before you lose your turn. I want to bring these new feature to the game. Observations After watching a family play the game I thought that it was difficult to see if someone had ‘just’ touched the metal with the tweezers. I also though that children seemed to make more mistakes and did not spend much time having their ‘go’ which meant that they did not really ‘win’ often.

9 User Requirements Performance Requirements The circuit must detect any touch with the tweezers on the metal The sound from the buzzer must be heard clearly form outside the case The lives must be displayed in sequence and be clearly visible The game needs a reset button for when passed onto the next player The game needs an on/off switch The tweezers and parts need to be able to kept safe when not in use. User requirements The game must be easy to use / play It should require little or no maintenance The power supply should last as long as possible and be easily changed The game should be attractive, have a eye-catching theme, be colourful so that children will want to play it The case should be easy to clean and not cause any hazards

10 Safety and Quality The electronic circuit and case must be manufactured safely, taking care when using tools, equipment and processes, so that fumes from solder and plastic cement are not inhaled and chemicals are not touched or spilled. Scale of Production and Cost The design is for a one-off prototype or concept product. However it should be capable of being made in bigger numbers for batch production The game needs to be small, attractive, and cost no more than £5 so that it would be possible to enter an already established and competitive market.

11 Analysis of an Operation Game The traditional operation game has only an input and 2 x outputs. When the player touches the tweezers against the side of the metal casing then the bulb and battery are switched on.
