9 Scholarships and Learnerships  Scholarships – awarded for academic, sport or cultural excellence – don’t have to pay back.  Learnership – when employer and government fund your studies – practical experience combined with structured learning – to improve skills.

10 Lesson 36 Make the most of your mind  Which part of the body is used to measure intelligence?  Do you think you can exercise this body part? How?  Can the exercises you apply to strengthen this body part be used to improve your studies? Motivate how?  Name a few study methods you use when you are studying?  What are learning (study)skills?  What would you regard as learning (study) skills? Why?

11 Answers lesson 36  The Brain  Yes – by doing brain exercises e.g. memory training, listening skills, reading skills, comprehension skills, meaning in context skills, concentration skills, Identifying important concepts problem solving skills etc.  Yes – trying to memorise the work – formal learning (trying new methods of reading and writing etc. ) Informal learning ( imitate other people) on the job learning etc.  Read and write, memorisation, mind maps, summarise, mnemonics, question and answers etc.  Skills that will improve your ability to understand work better, and to explain work better, write work better, and to listen better etc.  Reading, Writing, Understanding, recalling information etc.

13 Lesson 37: Skills required to improve your Studying  Listening: Passive Listening – just sitting and listening without participation in class – problem is mind wonders after a while or get distracted by others Active Listening – Involve in lesson – focussed – answer questions - clarify certain concepts – try to read about topic

18 Lesson 38 Study Methods  Rote Learning – Memorising work parrot fashion  SQ3R – Survey, Questions, Read, Recall, Review.  Mnemonics – using acronyms to remember  Mind maps – using key concepts and expand on it.  Zopp Cards (Flashcards)– making notes on cards  Tables and Flow Charts – using diagrams and graphs  Note Taking – develop own form of shorthand, use different symbols in your shorthand  Questions and answers – design own questions and answer them.

19 Lesson 39 Solution seeking skills  Fact finding – separate fact from fiction – focus on what is real and not rumours, perception or your imagination  Problem Solving – identify the problem throughout all the unimportant things  Idea Finding – Brainstorm ideas which may help with the problem and the solution  Solution Finding – More than one solution – take one that will be best in long term  Acceptance Finding – decide on path to take trust that you will succeed and it best option
