Mechanical Hazards Master Notes PrintED IGCB 7. Describe appropriate safety procedures to follow when operating equipment.
2
Objective The student will identify mechanical hazards in order to operate machinery safely. Students will identify lockout/tagout equipment in order to lockout/tagout a piece of equipment
3
Mechanical Hazards What is a mechanical hazard?
4
Mechanical Hazards Mechanical hazards can be controlled if: Machines are properly guarded Equipment is locked out and tagged out during maintenance
5
Mechanical Hazards Mechanical hazards can be controlled if: Personal protective gear is used properly Workers are trained to handle materials, tools, and equipment safely
6
Mechanical Hazards Hazards are posed by: Spinning rollers Rotating chains and sprockets Turning gears Rotating belts
7
Mechanical Hazards Contact with loose clothing, hair, or skin can cause severe injury
8
Machine Guarding Machine guards protect parts of the human body from being cut, squashed, or hit by flying fragments Guards also protect equipment from foreign objects
9
Machine Guards If a guard is in place, do not remove it to perform an operation. When the guard is moved out of position, the machine stops Equipment should not be used when guards are missing, broken, or out of adjustment
10
Nip Points Nip points exist where two cylinders meet or come close to one another Loose clothing can be caught and pulled into a nip point Long hair can become caught in a nip point
11
Working with Machinery Do not wear loose clothing Always wear a cap or a head band and tie back long hair Do not wear jewelry of any kind no watches no chains no rings no bracelets
12
Lockout Devices When performing maintenance on a piece of equipment, the power supply must be cut off Lockout devices keep switches locked in a safe position to keep a machine from accidentally energizing
13
Tagout Devices A tagout device is a prominent warning securely fastened to a piece of equipment An attempt to restore power should not be made until repairs are made and the tag is removed by the person who placed it
14
Summary Learn to recognize mechanical hazards Be aware of the dangers that your clothing, hair, and jewelry cause around mechanical hazards Take care of potential safety hazards before operating a piece of machinery Look out for fellow classmates and make them aware of potential danger
