 Used on a trial basis this term  Used by a number of other Universities  A must have for all universities?  How does it work?  How well does it work in different usage? 2

 Connect (provision) Moodle course to panopto  Creates a panopto folder, picks up students  Need to re-do to update students  Recording software installed on computer  Open PowerPoint – allows indexing  Open panopto 3

4

 Once recorded uploaded to a folder online 5

 Best if used with PowerPoint  Recording is searchable  Open PowerPoint first  Else Panopto can take 30 seconds or more to work  Microphones in classroom is a problem  Can’t move, question and answer faint  Local saving  Must remember to upload at end of class 9

 Lecture changed to holistic, interactive large group  2 hours, 140 students  Students listen to Panopto before attending  Voiced over powerpoint; basics of a topic  Up to 30 minutes in length  Students listen online or via an app  Short scenarios used to give context to knowledge  Students write outcomes of cases in handbook while listening  Large group based on content in Panopto: focus on applying knowledge, not giving knowledge  Overwhelmingly popular response to Panopto recordings  Scope to do more with screen capture than just voice over 10

 Pluses  Installation of software is straightforward on both PC and Mac and most students had little difficulty using the system to record a 2-5 minute screencast  Faculty laptops could be borrowed  Upload to Panopto course dropbox area is secure  Minuses  Panopto does not automatically synchronise for students joining late  Default file name for uploads is just the date and time 11

 CIS Stage committees have asked for more lecture capture  LAW course written comments  54 positive & 3 negative  85% re-watched after the class  “I think a screen cast is a very important task. Even a very brilliant student …while delivering in front of audience becomes failure. Thanks for your good idea.”  “Excellent, I prefer listening to the Panopto as you can always go back and refer back to the Panopto if you have missed something or found a topic a bit challenging.” 13

 Complex set–up, then easy to use BUT be prepared for failures  Popular with students BUT only when embedded as part of the teaching and learning strategy OR to record student presentations OR for student assessment  Students do watch the recordings BUT who else will?  There are worries about managerialisation 14
