June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Geometry Software Poly is a free shareware program for exploring, manipulating, and constructing polyhedra.Versions of polyhedra may be printed, cut out, and folded to produce 3- D models. It can be downloaded free at www.peda.com/poly. Grade 3 and up. www.peda.com/poly

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley More Geometry Software Factory is a math game in which students recreate a design of lines and punches. It is a critical thinking software program which prompts students to guess and check, work backwards, and think sequentially. It also involves visual/spatial skills.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley More Geometry Software Logic Blocks is a software program designed for students in grades K-5. Logic Blocks consists of four primary geometry activities: Layers, Smoke Screen, Patterns, and Mirrors. Each activity has three levels of directed problem solving exercises. Purchasing information located at www.learningbox.com.learningbox.com

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley And Even More Geometry Software Geometer’s Sketchpad - This advanced geometry software can be used for grades 5 and up. It is a geometrical construction and exploration tool. There are sample problems that can be used for effective instruction and student exploration.Geometer’s Sketchpad

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Problem of the Day Links Math Challenge: Moanalua Intermediate School’s web site offers challenging math brain teasers. 12 June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 1 - Angles Focus: Have students stand up and turn in quarter and half turns. Relate this to angles. Lesson: Instruct students on various examples of 90/180/360 degree angles. Practice: Students will use Factory to apply their new knowledge of angles Activity: Construct stick pretzel and frosting angles. Assessment: Students will quiz another student on an angle they constructed.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 2: Symmetry Focus: Have students explore classroom for objects that are symmetrical. Lesson: Explain concept of symmetry and show various examples. Activity: Students will create symmetrical designs using pattern blocks. Practice: Students will apply their new knowledge of symmetry by using the Mirrors section of the program Logic Blocks.Logic Blocks Assessment: Teacher observation of pattern block activity.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 3 - Solids Focus: Show various 3-D solid shapes. Have students identify everyday objects that are similar to these shapes. Lesson: Discuss differences between plane and solid shapes. Share examples. Stress terminology. Practice: Students will manipulate various 3-D shapes using the program Poly.Poly. Activity: Students will print the surface area of a 3-D shape and construct a model. Assessment: Test from math book.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 4 - Coordinates Focus: Teach students the over and up dance. Reinforces the axis order. Lesson: Refer to the Math text for lesson. Activity: Play coordinate Battleship game.Battleship game Practice: Students will engage themselves with the on-line game What’s the Point. What’s the Point Assessment: Construct a coordinate grid using student desks. Conduct performance assessment of students placing themselves at specific coordinates.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 5 - Perimeter Focus: Take students outside and have them count steps around progressively larger 4-sided shapes such as; 4 square box, black top, playground, etc. Lesson: Teacher will introduce concept of perimeter using the examples from textbook. Activity: Using a paper grid students will create different shapes with given perimeters. Practice: Students will play the on-line game Shape Surveyor. Shape Surveyor Assessment: Performance assessment using pattern blocks creating shapes with given perimeters.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson Plan 6- Vocabulary Focus: Students will decorate their geometry vocabulary folder. The folder contains a list of geometry words with a space for students to write the meaning and draw a picture of the concept. Lesson: As concepts are introduced throughout the unit, students complete the appropriate vocabulary section. Practice: Students play the on-line interactive timed game Matho (Geometry version) which reinforces geometry vocabulary.Matho Evaluation: Completed folders will be assessed. This is an excellent state and local assessment preparation activity.

June 2000Developed by M. Jeans, L. Wedel-Isaacs, J. Worley Lesson 7- Parallel and Perpendicular lines Focus: Hand each student two licorice sticks, and explain we are looking at the relationships of lines. Lesson: Explain the concepts using the licorice at a manipulative. Play “show me”, have students partner up and quiz each other about the concepts. Practice: Students create a set of parallel and perpendicular lines on KidPix using black font. Next they create a picture incorporating their lines into the scene (using anything color other than black).KidPix Evaluation: Pictures are imported into a class Powerpoint presentation and display. Students identify parallel and perpendicular lines during the presentation.
