OBJECTIVE (SWBAT): EVALUATE SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS Initial Activity: A new species of crab has been discovered on the Galapagos Islands. Here we have a photo of the new species. Many people are taking trips to the Galapagos to see this strange creature. What is your opinion on this creature?

CRITICAL THINKING Combining what you already know with new facts to decide whether you agree with something First, look at observations (use logic) -Based on things you already know, are the observations accurate (true) ? Then evaluate inferences (or conclusions) -Do conclusions from the observations make sense?

REASON(S) + LOGIC = CLAIMS Claim: Your opinion on a certain area or topic Reasons: The explanation of why you think a certain way. Logic: Using background knowledge on a topic to see if something makes sense. Conclusion: Formed by using a combination reasons and logic to make a claim

EVALUATING DATA Data- Information gathered during an experiment Data that is SPECIFIC is more reliable (or believable) Always do your best to take good notes during an experiment to get good data.

ACTIVITY TIME! Brainpop Video about Critical Thinking After watching the video we will work on two worksheets from brainpop related to critical thinking. Then we will do a whole class review quiz of the video **Remember to take notes during the video of new vocabulary**
