Barriers and Motivating Factors Associated With Volunteering at Student- Run Free Clinics: A Survey of Faculty Physicians Brian McDaniel (FSU MS3)

Faculty Advisors: Dr. Nancy Hardt, MD Dr. Mary Peoples-Sheps, DrPH Dr. Robert Hatch, MD MPH Contributors & Team Members: Adam Grippin Ronak Gandhi Vishal Patel Gabby Tom Donna Berezowski

Disclosures I have no potential conflicts of interest for this presentation

Equal Access Clinic Network Student run free clinics 4 weekly primary care sites Mon-Thur 6pm-9pm ~ 2000 primary care visits per year ~ 10,000 hours of hands on clinical experience for students per year

Physician Volunteers Mix of different specialties No reimbursement Malpractice coverage through UF-Shands Recruitment is largely by word of mouth

The Problem Network expansion  shortage of physicians Ideally would have 2 physicians each night –1 = Less patients seen and longer wait times –0 = Have to close clinics 34% of patients rated wait times as “poor” or “fair” [1]

Background 49.7% of clinic nights were “understaffed” 6.5% Closure rate (As high as 15% at one site) ~ 900 UF-Shands Physicians [2] ~ 1700 physicians in Alachua County [3]

Methods Anonymous 7 question online survey UF IRB Approved Opened 6/19/2014 and closed 7/2/2014 Email sent through Clinical Faculty Listserv Reminder email sent 1 week later Open to all MD/DO UF-Shands Faculty No reimbursement

Response Rate Number of Responses = 101 Approximate Response rate = 11.22% About ½ Primary Care Physicians & ½ Non-Primary Care

How Many of the Physicians in Your Department do you Think Know About the Equal Access Clinic Network?

What Motivates you to Volunteer (or Consider Volunteering) at Local Free Clinics?

What Factors Prevent You from Volunteering at Local Free Clinics More Often?

If Your Department Incentivized Volunteering by Considering it During the End of Year Evaluations, Would You Volunteer at Local Free Clinics More Often? * n = 101

Limitations Inherent limitations of surveys Not much literature on the topic No residents, PAs, NPs or community physicians 11.22% response rate (Possibly skewed towards current volunteers) Does not differentiate between those who have and have not volunteered before

Conclusions Need to expand advertising efforts Need to address misconceptions (malpractice coverage) Should mention other docs in their department that already volunteer Should focus on the impact on the community rather than the impact on students Should work with department heads to create incentives

Generalizability Free Clinics that recruit physicians Student Run Free Clinics Other voluntary activities that utilize faculty volunteers to benefit students or the community
