Engineering for Disaster Goal: Sustainable Disaster Relief Housing
2
The History of Life on Earth has been disrupted by major Catastrophic Events! Brainstorm with your group: Make a list of Catastrophic Events Describe specifically how they disrupt life Destruction and Devastation http://people.uwec.edu/piercech/disaster/homepage.htm

What do you Know about Earthquakes? www.scienceclarified.com/Di-El/Earthquake.html www.uh.edu/~jbutler/physical/chapter18.html

January 12 th, 2010 Haiti Earthquake Magnitude 7, Depth 10 km (6.2 miles) Epicenter ~ 16 miles Southwest from the capitol, Port-au-Prince Most powerful to hit in 200 years Haiti Earthquake Information
5
Perceived Shaking Extreme Violent Severe Very Strong Strong Moderate Light Weak Not Felt ~ 3 Million People experienced severe shaking from the impact of the Earthquake - Mike Blanpied (US Geological Survey)
6
Haiti Earthquake Information Destruction and Devastation 222,570 People Killed 300,000 Injured 1.3 Million Displaced 97,294 Houses Destroyed 188,383 Houses Damaged in Port-au-Prince & Southern Haiti Prior to Earthquake: Low income housing, unreinforced masonry After the Earthquake
7
Haiti Earthquake Information Aftershocks 5 powerful aftershocks 2 hours after the quake 2 largest aftershocks were Magnitude 6.0 and 5.9 6.0 happened 7 minutes after the main shock Aftershocks pictured in yellow 59 aftershocks of Magnitude 4.5 or greater have occurred

Haiti Earthquake Information Haiti is located on the western side of the island Hispaniola Earthquake occurred on the transform plate boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates The boundary is dominated by a left-lateral strike slip motion and compression Accommodates about 20 mm/y slip eastward to the North American plate (fairly slow) Strike Slip Fault Movement along a fault is horizontal Rocks on either side of the fault slide past each other Sliding forces are called shearing which bend and twist the land If the land gets caught as it slides, an earthquake will happen http://www.schools.utah.gov http://student.ttuhsc.edu

Haiti Earthquake Information Between the Caribbean and North American plates is two major east-west trending, strike-slip fault systems http://www.vagabondjourney.com Septentrional fault system in northern Haiti Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system in southern Haiti The event occurred as a left-lateral slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system Historical Earthquakes in Haiti http://cires.colorado.edu/~bilham/Haiti/

Haiti Today - - 6 Months Later http://www.globalgiving.org http://www.news.com USA Today July 12 th, 2010 “Nothing has changed in six months!” Meeting basic needs is still difficult! Food ShelterWater Medical Care Sanitation 1 st Step: Removing ALL the rubble. 1.5 million who are homeless Haitian government is still in shock!

Providing Shelter in Haiti What can we learn from past efforts? Emergency Temporary Housing Facility for disaster victims from Hurricane Katrina Group Project What would you purpose for disaster relief housing in Haiti? Materials? Environmental Impacts? Cultural Questions? Who would build it? Is it sustainable? http://www.katrinadestruction.com http://abcnews.go.com
