Baden-Powell Units The Program of Success

BSA Mission... prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law

"There is no more significant work in this world than the preparation of boys to become men of capacity, of strength, of integrity, who are qualified to live productive and meaningful lives." Gordon B. Hinckley – April 1985 - Ensign

Aims of Scouting Build the character of young men –Scouting is designed to teach boys leadership skills, self-sufficiency, and develop them into well-adjusted adults Provide citizenship training –Scouting teaches boys respect for their country and its traditions and citizens, as well as the traditions and citizens of other countries Promote physical and mental fitness –Scouting helps boys learn how to manage their mental health/wellness, spiritual wellness, and their physical health/wellness

Aims of the Church Instill devotion to faith and help bring boys to testimony Create a lasting spirit of meaningful service Build young men’s character Strengthen family ties Prepare effective missionaries

Scouting and the Church The LDS Church decided to be a part of the Scouting program because our goals align. A good scouting program will fulfill the aims of the Church, as well as the aims of Scouting.

What ensures these aims are met? A Quality Program!

The Baden-Powell Unit Program Ensures that Cub Scouts are receiving a quality program. Without a quality program, scout investment is very negatively affected. A boy who doesn’t invest in the program may “earn” his Eagle rank on the surface, but did he really earn his Eagle? Can he really look back on the rank with pride?

Importance of Quality Program In the end, who do we hurt by delivering a poor program? We hurt the boys.

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training Objective Increase youth retention by delivering a quality program.

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training The Challenge Recruit and train volunteers (Unit Commissioners) to implement and maintain the program under the guidance and direction of a Council Commissioner Staff member and a Professional Staff Advisor.

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training The Plan Coordinate a district’s involvement with their Key 3 Train Baden Powell Unit Commissioners Districts will identify packs for the program Give training to the Baden Powell Units

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training What Packs Will Be Targeted All new packs Soccer in Scouting packs All council packs will be included in the program. Selection priority; if one or more of the following conditions exists: - Unit leadership not trained - Not a Quality Unit - Low advancement, retention, growth and/or parent involvement

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 1. Trained Leaders –ensure that all leaders complete basic training before they begin their volunteer assignment. Leaders can’t be at their best without training; the BSA uses time-proven methods of achieving the aims of Scouting, and it is very important that leaders be trained in using those methods.

Remember: no trained leaders, no quality program; no quality program, why do Scouting? TRAINED LEADERS ARE THE KEY!

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 2.Annual Plan and Budget –work with unit committees to ensure that an annual calendar and budget is developed by August of each year. Ensures quality program through prior planning; a yearly plan can easily be modified if needs arise Keeps pack on track financially

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 3.Membership –assist with spring and fall recruitment activities which can include: boy talks at schools and School Nights. Gives boys learning opportunities for communicating with peers Helps the pack grow Gives other youth chance to see how Scouting can serve them Functions as a missionary tool

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 4.Unit Fundraisers –conduct council sponsored fundraiser(s) of popcorn sales and/or Scout-O-Rama Ticket Sales. Boys learn how to deal with sales/salesmanship Boys begin to develop diplomacy skills Helps them learn self-sufficiency Boys learn how to be a contributing member of a group through the concept of “paying your own way”.

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 5.Advancement –ensure the new Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide is being utilized to complete achievements and electives for rank advancements. Use the BSA online advancement system. Have meaningful and timely recognition for advancements at pack and den meetings. Encourages boys by recognizing their success Quality program will encourage advancement naturally Helps pack keep records current between pack and council

Cub Scout Pack Objective for Success 6.Outdoor Program –promote year-round outdoor activities and attendance at a council sponsored Cub Scout camping experience. Ensure outdoor coordinator is BALOO and Hazardous Weather trained. One of the methods of Scouting Helps provide a “laboratory” for other Scout skills, experiences Year round experience important to keeping Scouts invested in Scouting

Cub Scout Pack Objectives for Success These objectives are meant to use the Methods of Scouting to deliver quality program Each objective imparts important Scout and life skills to help boys become self-sufficient, confident, faithful, and strong. A quality program will create the best Scouts, boys, and church members.

“I pondered the thought, ‘How many boys have had their lives blessed–even saved–by the Scout movement begun by Baden-Powell?’ Unlike others memorialized within the walls of Westminster Abbey, Baden-Powell had neither sailed the stormy seas of glory nor founded empires of worldly wealth. Rather, he was a builder of boys–one who taught them well how to run and win the race of life. Every boy blessed by Scouting adopts the motto “Be Prepared.” He subscribes to the slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily.” Scouting provides proficiency badges to encourage skills and personal endeavor. Scouting teaches boys how to live, not merely how to make a living.” —President Thomas S. Monson Aaronic Priesthood–Scouting Broadcast, May 12, 2007 “This is not an optional program … Scouting is no longer on trial. It is an economically, socially, and spiritually sound program. It builds men of character and spirituality and trains them for citizen and leadership responsibility. Scouting teaches a boy to take care of himself and stand on his own two feet. It is an inspired program for a demanding time. This is that time! I would to God that every boy of Scouting age could have the benefits and blessings of this great program. It is truly a noble program. It is a builder of character not only in the boys but also in the men who provide the leadership.” —President Ezra Taft Benson Regional Representatives Seminar, Salt Lake City, Utah, March 31, 1978

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training The Agreements Baden Powell Units sign agreement to do 100% of the program. Baden Powell Unit Commissioners sign agreement committing to help unit(s) complete agreement.

Grand Canyon Council - Baden Powell Unit Program - Training

Evaluation After 90 days the unit will be evaluated using the “Unit Commissioner Worksheet (Pack)” and the Baden Powell Unit Agreement form. It is the intent that a unit will increase in program quality and organizational skills within 6 months. Pack health will be assessed on an ongoing basis.

Baden-Powell Units Together, we can help young men achieve the aims of both Scouting and the Church By challenging units to participate in the Baden- Powell Unit program, they feel successful and receive special recognition Commissioners also receive special recognition for their commitment to quality and excellence through the Baden-Powell Unit program. Overall benefit from Scouting increases across the board: parent involvement, parent enjoyment, advancement, etc.

Baden-Powell Units Together we can ensure quality programs for all boys!
