3 SYMBOLISM – A HIDDEN MEANING  Symbolism - a figure of speech in which a person, object, or situation represent something in addition to its literal meaning.  Most commonly, a symbol will present itself in the form of:  a word  a figure of speech  an event  an action

4 SYMBOLIC MEANING OF COLORS Red : immoral; blood, passion, emotion, danger, or daring; often associated with fire Black: seen as a cold and death Green : inexperience, hope; new life, immaturity; Blue : cool, calm, peaceful, sadness Purple : royalty, love White : innocence, life, light, purity, or enlightenment

5 NATURE  Seasons  Spring: birth, new beginning  Summer: maturity, knowledge  Autumn: decline, nearing death, growing old  Winter: death, sleep, hibernation, or stagnation

6 NATURE Water : washes away guilt, cleansing River : fluidity of life, stream of life and death Moon : changing and returning shape Sun : source of light, heat and life Mountain : places where heaven and earth meet; stability, safety, often symbolic of human pride

7 WEATHER/TIME Snow : blanket which obscures, covers Fog/Mist : prevents clear vision or thinking; represents isolation; Rain : sadness or despair Wind and Storms : violent human emotions Lightning : indicates the spark of life; it can be either life-giving or death dealing, so it is a sign of power and strength Morning : symbol of purity and promise Rainbows : cycles of rebirth, could come at the resolution of conflict Thunder : the voice of God or gods

8 ANIMALS Dove : peace, purity, simplicity Fox : slyness, cleverness Raven : death, destruction; Lion : power, pride Serpent/Snake : temptation, evil Mouse : shyness, meekness Hawk : sharp, keen eyesight Owl : wisdom, rational knowledge; messenger of death Cats : cunning, and ingenuity Lamb : serves as a manifestation of the power of Spring and renewal, sacrificial element, the children of God

9 HOW TO LOCATE SYMBOLS  Some symbols may be obvious…  Others, may be symbolic within the context of the story: ”I’m chief, And what about the fire? And I've got the conch” - Lord of the Flies  To find these symbols, readers need to look for repetition of these symbols within the text.

10 LET’S PRACTICE “I left the jutra to chop wood. I began my walk through the snow, five kilometers to the tree line. That's when I saw it. A tiny silver of gold appeared between shades of gray on the horizon. I stared at the amber band of sunlight, smiling. The sun had returned. I closed my eyes. I felt Andrius moving close.
