LESSON PLAN KATHLEEN PROVINZANO, PH.D AUGUST 4, 2011 Developing School Culture

Prior Knowledge (where we have been)… Culture defined Culture and Change Connection Established Theoretical Perspectives Studied: Kotter’s Leading Bold Change Fullan’s Change Theory Senge’s Learning Organizations and Systems Thinking Now, let us put theory into practice……

Here is where we are going…. “The educational leader needs to lead in a culture of change, create a culture of change, produce the capacity to seek, critically assess, and selectively incorporate new ideas and practices (in and outside the organization) all of the time”. Michael Fullan Sounds great; but there are only so many hours in a day; how do you make this happen?

Introduction to the PLC… A valuable resource for those principals who want to establish and sustain a positive school culture is the PLC. So……… What exactly is a PLC and how will a PLC help me establish a positive school culture in my building? I know, a KWL chart can help!

Introduction to the PLC… DuFour (2002) stated that the conceptual framework for the PLC is grouped into three major themes: 1. A solid foundation consisting of collaboratively developed and widely shared mission, vision, values and goals. 2. Collaborative teams that work interdependently to achieve common goals. 3. A focus on results as evidenced by a commitment to continuous improvement.

Introduction to the PLC… Our focus for today is: Theme One: What is our purpose, why do we exist, and what type of school do we hope to become? What is our shared mission and vision?

Introduction to the PLC… The development of the shared mission and vision is a collaborative approach that involves the input of all stakeholders. These statements and images must be aligned to the needs and wants of the staff, students, and entire school community. This is how we begin to promote our school culture.

Introduction to the PLC… Prior to creating our shared mission and vision, we need to understand who are students are. Let’s watch the following: While watching, please jot down two things that stand out to you or you believe are critical to understanding our students. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A-ZVCjfWf8

Introduction to the PLC… Now, let’s have some fun: Brainstorming Activity! In your group, identify the top four connections made and document them using a non-linguistic visual representation.

Introduction to the PLC…

Based upon the connections we made, let’s develop a list of common vocabulary that reflects our students (four words). Oh no, it looks like time is running out….

Introduction to the PLC… How can we extend the conversation? I know, perhaps social networking and Web 2.0 technologies can help?

Introduction to the PLC… Online technologies can connect people and enable them to collaborate with each other anytime, anywhere. Let’s see how it can work for us: http://www.edmodo.com/home http://developingschoolculture.wikispaces.com/

Lesson Closure… Please complete your Exit Ticket prior to leaving. E-mail Address One thing you learned One thing you still need to learn more about (Each on a separate post-it)
