Reminders   If you did not turn in the 4 paragraphs yesterday then please put them on the front table now.   Tomorrow you will have a 22 question test covering the rules and expectations of this class. You may use notes but you may not use the syllabus as notes.

Answer the following (per 1-3) Take out a sheet of paper and tear it in half. You may give the other half to a friend. On the front you will write a paragraph (which will take up the whole side of the paper) in which you explain as clearly as possible the following: where do you see yourself in 4 years? What classes are you currently taking that will help you to get to where you want to be? What activities are you in that will help you achieve your goals? How motivated are you to do whatever it takes to achieve these goals? What does the underlined phrase look like to you? On the back you will write another paragraph using the whole side in which you share 3 weaknesses or barriers you have to achieving these goals. These weaknesses can be behavioral, academic, or environmental. There are no right or wrong answers. I’m looking at your ability to put a complete paragraph together and to get to know you and how I can help you to achieve what you want to achieve in your life. Be honest with me and with yourself.

Answer the following (per 4-7) Take out a sheet of paper and tear it in half. You may give the other half to a friend. On the front you will write a paragraph (which will take up the whole side of the paper) in which you explain as clearly as possible why you are in school? What do you want out of school? What skills are you hoping to learn or grow in that will help you to achieve your future goals. On the back you will write another paragraph using the whole side in which you share 3 weaknesses or barriers you have. These weaknesses can be behavioral, academic, or environmental. There are no right or wrong answers. I’m looking at your ability to put a complete paragraph together and to get to know you and how I can help you to achieve what you want to achieve in your life. Be honest with me and with yourself.

Questionnaire  Please take out the paper that you were working on with a partner yesterday.  You have 10 minutes to complete this activity.  Please find your partner and continue asking the questions.

What do you hope to study after high school? 5. What type of job do you hope to have in the future? 6. What is the difference between a job and a career? 7. By this time of your education, what is the job of a teacher for you? 8. What is your job as a student?

Are you going into the military, well you must have and maintain at least a C average throughout high school. Over the next 3 years there will be dramatic cuts to all branches of the military so the competition to get in will be significantly higher, so if that is your calling then you may want to shoot for at least a 2.5 GPA every year. Are you going for a 4 year university? This will take a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (B) to even begin to be considered. You also need to get involved in your school, which means clubs, sports, and a lot of community service. Find what you are interested in and get involved every year. Try something new, but don't just come to school and do nothing or you will hate high school. Many of you already are thinking that this dream is out of reach because you have no money and your family survives on food stamps or you're a foster child. Guess what? You'll find out your junior and senior year that there is so much money available for your specific situation to make your dreams a reality. I have a young girl that's just about to start at Cal State Fullerton who comes from a family with absolutely no money. Their family is the definition of poverty, yet because of her great academic work ethic, her 4 years of being in the drama department, and involvement in other programs like Christian Club and Best Buddies her $23,000 yearly bill is paid off through various programs for the poor. I could talk all period of students I've had over the past 3 years of teaching seniors that are sitting in a university that thought they'd never get there because of the environment they came from, but their goals and dreams were bigger than all these obstacles. They are now making their dreams a reality. Or, are you just planning on going to a junior college like Valley? True, there are no requirements to get in, but the consequences of doing poorly the next 4 years will not make life any easier in a junior college. There are too many people going and not nearly enough classes to meet the needs of the growing population, so getting classes is very hard and may not lead to a quality job in the future because the classes are taught at a much lower level than the university system.

No matter what your future goals are, your most urgent goal is to get your high school diploma. This requires that you pass all your classes with at least a C. Please note, this D will not be accepted by the military or any 4 year university. To them a D is the same as an F. If you get an F in any class over the next 4 years you must re-take the class, so would you rather work your hardest to get a good grade the first time or would you rather sit in a classroom a second time re-doing the same things over again? The choice is yours, but no matter what you choose the whole idea of social promotion is over and your future goals and dreams come down to the choices you make starting today and continuing for the next 4 years, which will fly by faster than you can imagine. If you were a screw up for the past 8 years and have just been passed along then you now have a second chance to change who you were. Please note that it's on your shoulders now. You have to be willing to make the changes necessary to fix your poor choices in the past to making good choices now to help you achieve your goals and dreams.

1. What is your ultimate goal for this school year? 2. How do you plan to get involved in this school? 3. What is your ultimate goal over the next 4 years? 4. What do you hope to study after high school? 5. What type of job do you hope to have in the future? 6. What is the difference between a job and a career? 7. By this time of your education, what is the job of a teacher for you? 8. What is your job as a student? PLEASE PASS FORWARD AND HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND
