Animal Cell Discovery! by Lara Means

Lesson information Content Area: Science Grade Level: 5 Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is to present information related to the structures and functions of animal cells. Learning Objective: Given review questions, students will be able to identify the basic structures and functions of animal cells with 95% accuracy. Content Standard: GLE 0507.1.1 Distinguish between the basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells Accomplishment: Through this lesson the students will be able to recognize an animal cell and discuss its various structures and functions.

Hello! I’m an animal cell and I have many interesting parts! Nucleus Cell Membrane Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum(E.R.) Golgi body Cytoplasm

First, lets look at the Nucleus and the Cell Membrane. The Nucleus acts like the brain of the cell. It helps control eating, movement, and reproduction. The Cell Membrane is like a plastic bag around the outside of the cell. It helps to hold all of the cells structures and fluids inside.

What about the Mitochondria and the Endoplasmic Reticulum(E.R.)? The Mitochondria acts like the powerhouse of the cell. It helps break down nutrients to create energy. This process is called Cellular Respiration. There are two different types of Endoplasmic Reticulum(E.R.) and they perform different functions.

The differences between Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum and Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum. Smooth E.R. Smooth E.R. DOES NOT contain Ribosome’s on its outer surface. Smooth E.R. helps store substances that the cell may need later. Rough E.R. Ribosome’s are attached to the outer surface of Rough E.R. Rough E.R. helps synthesize and package proteins within the cell.

Finally, lets learn about Cytoplasm and Golgi Body. Cytoplasm is the fluid that fills the cell. The Golgi Body gathers simple molecules and combines them to make molecules that are more complex. It then takes those big molecules, packages them in vacuoles, and either stores them for later use or sends them out of the cell. The Golgi Body performs functions similar to the Endoplasmic Reticulum.

So what are a few basic differences between Animal cells and Plant cells? Animal cell: Animal cells DO NOT have cell walls They have a more rounded (irregular) shape They DO NOT create their own food Animal cells are found in animals Plant cell: Plant cells contain cell walls They are rectangular (fixed) in shape Plant cells make their own food by the use of structures called chloroplasts Plant cells are found in plants

Alright! Take a few minutes to review before you begin your quiz questions. Nucleus Cell Membrane Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum (smooth and rough) Golgi Body Cytoplasm Plant and animal cell differences

1.) Which word best describes the nucleus of a cell? Powerhouse Plastic bag Plastic bag Brain

That’s Correct! The Nucleus acts like the brain of the cell. It helps control eating, movement, and reproduction within the cell.

2.) Which two structures are known to have similar functions? Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum and Cell Membrane Endoplasmic Reticulum and Cell Membrane Endoplasmic Reticulum and Golgi Body Endoplasmic Reticulum and Golgi Body

Great Work! The Endoplasmic Reticulum and the Golgi Body both store and package substances within the cell.

3.) Which statement is true about plant or animal cells? Animal cells often make their own food Animal cells often make their own food Animal cells do not have cell walls Animal cells do not have cell walls Plant cells are irregular in shape Plant cells are irregular in shape

Way To Go! Plant cells have cell walls but Animal cells do not.

Congratulations, you have completed your quiz questions! If you chose any answers incorrectly write them down and spend some more time focusing on those topics at home or in your spare time.
