12 Still Life’s Still Life: subject matter that exists of “still” objects meaning they do not move. Originally Still Life's were started as a way to show religious themes due to most peasants not being able to read the Bible. (Bibles were written in Latin). Eventually this evolved into symbols that represented death and the life hereafter. Some still life’s were also meant to contain sexual jokes. Note the Fruit on the Ledge…Those crazy artists… Harmen Steenwijck, Vanitas (1640) Fruit on a Stone Ledge-Caravaggio. 1605-1607
