3 Aim: In 1765, how did English colonists react to taxes imposed by England, the “mother country”? Do Now: The town of Rye is having some financial troubles. In order to make money, students must now pay an extra tax on gum, pens, pencils, riding your bike, talking, texting on your cell phone and playing video games. How might you react to this new tax? HW: Stamp Act Letter

4 1760’s England’s Money Troubles Lots of debt from which war? With French gone, English colonists migrating west Upsetting Indians Costing England more $ Pontiac’s War 1763 Pontiac in Council

5 Proclamation Line of 1763 England says to colonists: “No more crossing the Appalachian Mountains.” Too much trouble and $ fighting Indians. Move back east if you are already out there. 10,000 Brit troops sent What would you do?

6 Who’s going to pay for all this??? Prime Minister Grenville and Parliament pass new tax laws: The Sugar Act 1765 The Stamp Act 1765 – a tax on ALL paper products Wills, diplomas, marriage license, newspapers, almanacs, playing cards, dice.

7 Colonists’ Reaction Riots in NYC, Newport, Charleston Threw rocks at tax collectors Burned life-size dolls that looked like tax collectors

8 No Taxation Without Representation! Colonists argued that they were not involved in the decision process, so Parliament had no right to tax them. Referenced Magna Carta (1215) Only the colonies could tax their own people Boycotted English goods Gathered a Stamp Act Congress in Oct. 1765, in NYC. wrote letters and petitions about why they disliked new taxes. 1766 Parliament REPEALED Stamp Act!
