HEREDITY & DISEASE Resistance to Internal Parasites & External Parasites Presented by: Janae’ Matthews December 1, 2011
2
What Are Parasites ? A parasite is an organism that depends on a host for its survival. The host is another living body, which the parasite feeds off of, usually causing harm to the host and can either be internal or external host.

Direct Life Cycle Indirect Life cycle Parasites Life Cycle
4
Internal Parasites External Parasites Feeds with part of, or whole body standing outside the host's surface. Can be detected quicker. Internal Parasites vs. External Parasites Live in the heart or intestinal tract. Longer life span.
5
Common Internal Parasites Heartworms -Heartworms are large worms that live commonly in the hearts of dogs and cats but can also found in other species. host for this parasite. Heartworms are transmitted is through the bite of an infected mosquito. Round worms -Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite in dogs and cats in the world. Roundworm infections are zoonotics diseases.

Common Internal Parasites Hook worms - common parasitic pests that can invade the intestines of humans. Hookworms are contracted by the contact of bare skin with hookworm larvae. Whipworms- small worm that is usually less than a ¼ inch long with a whip-like shape often located by the reproductive organs. Adults release eggs which pass out of the dog in the stool.

Common External Parasites Ticks -Ticks are tiny parasites related to spiders and mites. They attach themselves to animals and humans and feed on their blood. Ticks live in woods, fields and brushy areas and can attach to any part of the body on animals or human. Fleas- Fleas have been around for millions of years, sucking the blood of animals and humans. Fleas live on pets, mammals, in carpets, in sofas as well as other household and farm goods.

Common External Parasites Mites -insect-like organisms, some of which bite or cause irritation to humans. While some mites parasitize animals, including man, others are scavengers, some feed on plants, and many prey on insects and other arthropods. Lice-A small, wingless, parasitic insect with piercing mouth parts that lives on the skin of mammals and bird. Lice are not spread to humans from pets or other animals.

. Ways to prevent Internal and External Parasites
15
How ? Treatments – Medications Selection - The act of carefully choosing something as being the best or most suitable. Heredity –The passing of trait to offspring from one generation to the another. Genetic Resistance-The ability to limit parasite burden through genes.
16
Genetic Resistance Affects an animals ability to resist or limit infection as well a with stand infection and can be passed down from generation to generation. Genes that offer resistance to infectious disease tend to cluster in families.
17
Genetic resistance to Internal Parasites in Animals Most commonly found in ruminants such a goats, sheep and cattle because of their grazing behavior and poor immunity.
18
Genetic Resistance to External Parasites in Humans. Lice Genetically people of African American decent are less susceptible to getting head lice vs. non- black.
