8 OTHER DENOMINATIONS Fundamentalists: Born Again Christians --Bible contains the authentic word of God --A personal relationship should be maintained with Jesus --Life should be lived according to the literal interpretation of the Bible Islam: after 9-11 an upsurge of anti-Islamism, but on the whole the religion and its followers enjoy the same protection as any other faith

11 RELIGION AND POLITICAL ACTIVITY Throughout American history churches functioned as a civic club, church activity significantly influenced the nation’s social and political development Black churches played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement—Martin Luther King Evangelical Protestants helped the re-election of George Bush in 2004

Board of Education (1947) Issue: parents of students taking the bus to Catholic schools are reimbursed by the school district.-Can the state or school board financially support sectarian education? Decision reinforces Jefferson’s wall of separation, but the Court allowed the payment to continue McCollum v. Board of Education (1948) Religious instruction in public schools in release time (pupils upon parents’ approval can take religious instruction) is unconstitutional

14 THE MORAL SUPERWEAPON 1951: Board of Regents of New York State devises a non- denominational prayer: Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our Country 1961: Supreme Court declares it unconstitutional in Engel v. Vitale: it is no part of the business of government to compose official prayers Stone v. Graham (1980) Ten Commandments cannot be displayed at classroom walls Wallace v. Jaffree (1985) period of silence before instruction begins is unconstitutional Town of Greece v. Galloway (2013) does the prayer (non- denominational) violate the Establishment Clause? Currently before the Supreme Court.
