Next Steps in Path Computation Element (PCE) Architectures: From Software Defined Concepts to Standards, Interoperability and Deployment CSA FP7 ICT Call 11 Objective ICT-2013.1.1: Future Networks Oct 23, 2013 An Innovation Kitchen ~ A Think Tank for All

What motivates PACE? From academic research to innovations – The application driven networks (ADN) and software defined networks (SDN) recent examples of rapid transitions to innovation Indispensable industrial-academic alliances – Our research and industrial community is energized by the pursuit of ADN, SDN, and other and related innovations Openness and democratization of innovation – Open formats/open interfaces/user-driven programmability & democratizations of applications and content distribution IETF Path Computation Element (PCE) – A ripe standard and a prime example of a software defined network artefact & a tool to innovate in future networks

IETF PCE Primer PCC PCE TED R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 R6 Source starts reservation in the control plane Topology Information Updates stored in the TED PCEP Request PCEP Resp RSVP Signaling 2 3 1 A. Farrel, J Vasseour, J. Ash, RFC 4655, "A Path Computation Element (PCE)-Based Architecture”, http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4655.txtRFC 4655"A Path Computation Element (PCE)-Based Architecture”,

Example: Cooperating PCEs in a combined Internet/Fiber Network O. Gonzalez, et. Al, “Coordinated computation and Setup of Multilayer Paths,..”, IEEE Communication Magazine, 2013.

New Grounds: PCE and Wireless WLAN and Mesh – More about ensuring any-to-any reachability and providing load balancing than path computation per se – Topology data base, automated network planning, handling of TE parameters, etc. Wireless cellular – Cell infrastructure planning with “what if” capabilities considering traffic growth, mast failure, interference, and mast installation – PCE for mobile backhaul helps data – Can PCE help with planning of cell hand-off and manage policies for the same? Wireless sensor networks and broadcast – PCE compliments RPL in sensor networks – PCE as whitespace data base server?

Current SDN Specific Challenges Open Networking Foundation (ONF) – Design control systems and well-defined interfaces with external (non-ONF) functions, representing a not-to-be-missed opportunity for the third-party network control and management systems, such as PCE Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) – ETSI initiative leveraging virtualization concepts, with the growing role of PCE-like concepts Application-based Network Operations (ABNO) – An architecture proposed, developed and led within the IETF by leading members of our consortium – uses a variety of PCE-based tools and techniques.

From the ETSI NFV White Paper*: Case in Point * Network Functions Virtualisation – Introductory White Paper, Oct 2012 PACE

PACE Innovation Kitchen Innovate in system design, applications and algorithms in a variety of technologies, including: – Core packet Internet – Mobile backhaul networks – Cloud computing networks – Content Distribution Networks (CDN) – Next generation optical transport networks – Wireless sensor and mesh networks, Internet of Things (IoT) Promote innovation through third party network management applications and openness – Consolidate the PCE open source community

PACE: A Think Tank for All Research, development and standards – Clouds, Radio, Fiber, Internet of Things, Future Internet – A coordination action with the goal to concentrate and rapidly push forward PCE research efforts, development activities, and standardization Open source portal – Call for Cooperation – A portal, open source software and documentation repository Open forum for ideas exchange – Working Group creation – An open exchange of ideas about current and future uses of PCE aimed to bring out radical new ideas and to consolidate existing research Commitment to innovation – Workshops with published findings and recommendations – Bringing together thought leaders from Europe and around the world to investigate the stretch-potential for PCE in future networks
