STANDARDS-BASED INSTRUCTION IN BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS FOR COLLEGE & CAREER READY STUDENTS

TODAY’S OUTCOMES:  Examine how new standards have impacted teaching and learning in BCS.  Discuss what parents and students can expect in instruction at TC Roberson.

INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS IN MATH  Focus – Narrower and Deeper  Coherence –Standards are no longer an isolated event, rather an extension and connections of previous learning  Rigor – Balance conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

8 MATHEMATICAL PRACTICES  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively.  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.  Model with mathematics.  Use appropriate tools strategically.  Attend to precision.  Look for and make use of structure  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

STANDARD COMPARISON (ELEMENTARY MATH) 2003 2 nd Grade SCOS  3.01: Combine simple figures to create a given shape.  3.02: Describe the change in attributes as two- and three-dimensional figures are cut and rearranged. Grade 2 CCSS Math Standards Reason with shapes and their attributes. 2.G.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. 2.G.2: Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them. 2.G.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words haves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc, and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

STANDARD COMPARISON (HIGH SCHOOL MATH) 2003 Geometry SCOS  1.01: Use the trigonometric ratios to model and solve problems involving right triangles Math 2 Standards Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles G-SRT 6: Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles. G-SRT 7: Explain and use the relationship between the sine and cosine of complimentary angles G-SRT 8: Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.*

INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS IN ELA / LITERACY  Building Knowledge through Content-Rich Nonfiction and Informational Text  Reading and Writing Grounded in Evidence from the Text  Regular Practice with Complex Text and its Academic Vocabulary

STANDARD COMPARISON (ELEMENTARY ELA) 2004 4 th Grade SCOS  2.03: Read a variety of texts, including:  Fiction (legends, novels, folklore, science fiction).  Nonfiction (autobiographies, informational books, diaries, journals).  Poetry (concrete, haiku). 2013 4 th Grade ELA/Literacy Standards  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

SAMPLE STANDARD COMPARISON (9 TH -10 TH ENGLISH) 2004 SCOS 9 th English  5.01: Read and analyze various literary works by:  making thematic connections among literary texts  and media and contemporary issues. ELA Standards: Reading Literature 9-10  ELA. Literacy.RL 9-10.7: Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment (e.g. Auden's ”Musée des Beaux Arts" and Breughel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus).

FOCUS THEN … FOCUS NOW (MATH) 2003 SCOS 2013 Standards

FOCUS THEN … FOCUS NOW (ELA) 2003 SCOS 2013 Standards

STANDARDS  CURRICULUM  INSTRUCTION Standards   Describe what students need to know and be able to do  Established by State Board of Education  Have always been set by NC DPI Curriculum   Planned interaction of students with instructional content, materials, resources, and processes.  Adopted at district level guided by recommendations from state level.  Meets all students needs through differentiation strategies. “The standards themselves do not dictate curriculum, pedagogy, or delivery of content.” (corestandards.org) Instruction  Enactment  Plan  Decisions  Intensification

RESOURCES Mathematics  Achieve the Core Achieve the Core  Illustrative Mathematics Illustrative Mathematics  NC DPI Math Wiki – Parent Resources NC DPI Math Wiki – Parent Resources ELA  Achieve the Core Achieve the Core  NC DPI ELA/Literacy LiveBinders NC DPI ELA/Literacy LiveBinders  ReadWorks ReadWorks
