11 Parts of Speech Our speech is made up of words. Each word has a special job.

12 Parts of Speech (POS) Every word is a specific type of POS. The type of POS depends on its job. Some words change their POS, depending on the job in each sentence.

13 Main Types of Parts of Speech Nouns Verbs Adverbs Adjectives Pronouns Conjunctions Prepositions Interjections

14 Nouns The things that fill our lives Person, Place, or Thing

15 Nouns A noun can be the subject that does the action or the object that receives the action. 1. The player fumbled the football again. 2. Brian threw another interception during the game. 3. The fan pointed to his heroes with much pride.

16 Nouns Concrete nouns: can be seen, touched (field goal, football) Abstract nouns : cannot be seen or touched Include events, ideas, feelings

17 Verbs Action Words Tell what the noun is doing 1. The Steelers fan cried while watching the game. 2. Vikings fans cheer for their team. 3. Vikings fans strongly dislike the team from Green Bay.

18 Helping Verbs Verbs that don’t show action but help the main verb Have Am Was Is Do Were Be The crowd is joyously cheering for their favorite football team.

19 Adverbs Describe how we do what we do Adverbs often end in the suffix “ly.” The word “very” is always an adverb. Tigger jumps wildly. “Wildly” describes how Tigger jumps.

20 Adverbs Describe Verbs, Adjectives, or Adverbs He forcefully kicked the football for a field goal. The sad player agonizingly wept over the loss.

21 Adjectives Describe nouns (person, place, or thing) The depressed fan wept. The jubilant fan celebrated.

22 Adjectives The fast running back was Ben Tate. The crazy fan was clearly from Pittsburgh. The friendly, warm-hearted fan said, “Go, Browns!”

23 Create new sentences Add/replace vivid nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Noun: The man ate the Bacon Clubhouse burger. Noun: The food expert ate the hamburger. Verb: The man devoured the burger. Adjective: The man ate the humungous burger. Adjective: The gluttonous man ate the burger. Adverb: The man nonchalantly ate the burger.

25 Pronouns Short words that stand in for the noun 1. It was a good pass. 2. They filled the stands. 3. He cheered endlessly for a win.

26 Pronouns Taking the place of nouns… So you don’t have to keep repeating the name. Justin becomes “he.” This class becomes “we.” The class in 303 becomes “them.” LeBron became “IT”.

27 Conjunctions small words that connect other words, phrases, or sentences They can try and try, but they can’t beat us.

29 Prepositions Shows relationship of the noun to another word Prepositions are always followed, eventually, by a noun (prepositional phrase). after the game, inside the huddle

30 Prepositions of time and place 1. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. 2. After the game, the friends met around the corner.

31 Interjections Yippee!!!!!!!!!! show emotion Often used with an exclamation point Punctuated separately from the rest of the sentence. “Woohoo! I got a doughnut!”

32 Interjections Usually at the beginning of a sentence Dang, that was a bad call.. Wow, that must hurt!
