2  A Czech and Roman king Charles IV founded the Prague university by a deed of foundation on April 7, 1348 as a first university (studium generale) to the north of the Alps and to the east of Paris.  The university started to grow into a modern university during the reforms in 1848/49. It was gradually changing into a public institute educating a professional intelligentsia class.  At the turn of the 20th century, Charles University took advantage of new circumstances to develop a scientific research and some of its results achieved a world standards (1959 - professor Jaroslav Heyrovsky Nobel prize in the field of polarography).  After November 17, 1989: Supported by international cooperation a modern university life developed rapidly. Charles University keeps developing systematic research cooperation and takes part in both European and international programs.

3  Nowadays, Charles University belongs to the most eminent educational and scientific establishments in the Czech Republic which are recognized in both the European and global context. It is an outstanding cultural institution due to its scientific and pedagogical results and its unique historical tradition.  17 faculties, 3 collegiate institutes, 6 additional establishments for educational, scientific, research and developmental activities and other creative activities and for information service  More than 7000 University employees, 4000 of them are academic and research workers  Over 42 400 students (approximately one fifth of all the students in the Czech Republic) in more than 270 accredited academic programs with 600 departments (7 200 students for bachelor´s degrees, 29 000 students for master´s degrees, and over 6200 students in PhD programs); more than 4 300 foreign. Over 5 000 participants graduate from continuing education courses every year.

4  Established in 1946.  Educates teachers and other pedagogical staff for all types of schools and school systems, at various levels of study (Bachelors and Masters). The Faculty provides university-level education in the spheres of: Humanities, Social- Sciences, Art-Education, Physical Education, Mathematical and Natural Sciences.  The training is concentrated primarily on general school subjects for the 2 nd level of primary schools, for the 1 st level of primary schools, and for nursery schools. Further, training in Special Pedagogy, Educational Counselling, Preschool Training and for Educational Management is organized.  About 4 500 students. Postgraduate (doctoral) study concentrates on Pedagogical Science, Special Pedagogy, Educational Psychology, Didactic of Mathematics, Theory of Art and Musical Education

5  The main research activity concentrates on pedagogical study and similar spheres.  The Faculty of Education joined the Socrates Programme in the very first year of its operation at Charles University. In drawing up its strategy for the development and realisation of the programme it used its previous experience of international co-operation in the programmes TEMPUS, PHARE, NESA, ATEE and others.  Currently the Faculty of Education has co-operative links with nearly 30 partner universities, most of them in the framework of student and teacher mobility and other intensive programmes.
