 In a table?  On a graph?

 Groups of three or four  Each group needs: ◦ 5 Math 8 textbooks ◦ 1 small paper cup ◦ Pennies ◦ Several yellow strips of paper ◦ 1 sheet of graph paper ◦ 1 ruler  In one of the Math 8 books, open to page 8, Problem 1.1

Page 8 - 9 in Math 8 Textbook: Problem 1.1

1. Paper folder 2. Bridge builder and cup placement 3. Penny dropper 4. Data recorder  Complete Problem 1.1.  Each group will hand in one paper with responses to quesitons A-E.

 How does bridge strength seem to be related to the number of layers?  How is the pattern you describe illustrated in your group data and graph?

 How do you think the length of a bridge is related to its strength?  Are longer bridges stronger or weaker than shorter bridges?  What do you expect will happen in this experiment? ◦ What are the variables this time? ◦ Do you think the data will look like? What shape do you think the graph will have?

 One of each color paper strip. ◦ Yellow: 11 inches ◦ Purple: 9 inches ◦ Green: 8 inches ◦ Pink: 6 inches ◦ Blue: 4 inches  Complete Problem 1.2 on pages 10-11. Each group will hand in one paper with answers to A-D.

 As bridge length increases, what happens to the number of pennies it can support?  As bridge length decreases, what happens to the number of pennies it can support?  What shape or pattern do you see in your graph? Is the data linear?  How can you tell from the table that the graph will be curved?

 If this were a linear relationship, the graph would eventually cross the x-axis. What would be the meaning of the point where this happens?  What if the graph crosses the y-axis? What would be the meaning of that point?
