1 LEARNING ACTIVITY SUMMARY “VIRTUAL VCE DRAMA” Created by: Deanne Joosten SUMMARY:- Video conferencing and a variety of other technologies were used to offer remote students the opportunity to study VCE Drama (Units 3&4) in 2014. The three rural schools involved were unable to deliver VCE Drama due to low numbers or lack of qualified staff. The remote students joined my classroom in Ballarat ‘virtually’ for each lesson.

2 WHAT KIND OF LEARNING TOOK PLACE?  Collaboration: Working in groups to create an ensemble performance on the theme of technology  Communication: Students communicated both electronically and verbally in workshops and class discussions  Building knowledge & critical thinking: Students explored the themes and ideas and interpreted their ideas into a performance  ICT for learning: The students ICT skills improved quickly and consistently  Problem solving & innovation (creativity): We worked as a class to problem solve the challenges having half the students in the class ‘virtual’  Student self-assessment and reflection: As this style of learning was new the students and myself I constantly sought feedback and reflections from the students The following 21st Century Skills were implemented in ‘Virtual VCE Drama’ classes:-

3 HOW WAS TECHNOLOY USED?  Full class workshops were delivered using a MS LYNC meeting room. I dialled in using MS LYNC from my laptop and the three remote schools dialled into the MS LYNC meeting rooms from their schools Polycom units  Three separate meeting rooms were established so the students could work in groups (comprising of students from other schools)  All work was delivered to students electronically through a Website, Google Drive, Email and Facebook (a closed school group) A graphic representation of the distance covered using video conferencing. (An example of how technology can make the world a smaller place)

4 WHAT TECHNOLOGIES WERE USED? MS LYNC Each week resources, clips, teaching tools and class activities were posted on the website (Created using Weebly) GOOGLE DRIVE This was the way students collaborated when writing scripts. I also had all of the students work saved in their own folders and shared with me so I could comment and provide feedback. OTHER TOOLS USED TO MAKE ENGAGING TEACHING RESOURCES Quizlet Powtoon Padlet YouTube Facebook WEBSITE This was the video conferencing software used every class
