Classification Of Pump * Prepared by * Pavan hansaliya(140970105021, "B-bench") & all " B-bench " (TJ-1 chemical)

 What is pump? A pump is a machine which converts mechanical energy supply to it from some external source into pressure energy which is used to lift a liquid from a lower level to a higher level. A pump is machine used for handling liquids, solutions or slurries.

 Classification of pump  The pumps are classified as below: 1. Centrifugal pumps 2. Positive displacement pump

 Centrifugal pump A pump which lifts a liquid from a lower level to higher level by the action of centrifugal force is called as a centrifugal pump. In centrifugal pump, the kinetic energy of the liquid to be pumped is increased by the action of centrifugal force and is then converted into pressure energy that is needed to pump the liquid.

 Positive displacement pump In a positive displacement pump, the definite or fixed quantity of liquid is pumped in every revolution.  Positive displacement pumps are further classified as: 1. Reciprocating pump 2. Rotary pump

 Reciprocating pump A reciprocating pump essentially consists of piston or plunger which moves to and fro.  Types of reciprocating pumps : 1. Piston pumps 2. Plunger pumps 3. Diaphragm pumps

 Types of reciprocating pumps  Based on the reciprocating member : 1. Piston pump 2. Plunger pump 3. Diaphragm pump  According to the liquid being in contact with side of piston : 1. Single acting pump 2. Double acting pump

 Piston pump or plunger pump This type of pump may be single acting or double acting or direct acting, steam driven or power driven with a crank and flywheel. In case of single acting pumps, the liquid is admitted only on one side of the piston, while in double acting pumps, the liquid is admitted on both side of piston. The principle of a operation of plunger pump is same as that of the piston pump.

12  Diaphragm pump In a diaphragm pump, the reciprocating member is a flexible diaphragm of metal, plastic or rubber.

 Rotary pump In rotary pump, the chamber moves from inlet to discharge and back to the inlet.  Rotary pump classified as 1. Mono pump 2. Gear pump

 Mono pump This type of pump is capable of handling highly viscous material, it is widely used in the chemical industry for feeding slurries.

 Gear pump The gear pump are commonly used in the chemical industry for handling high viscosity liquid including molasses, paints and greases.
