3 Electrostatics An ion is a charged atom. A positive ion has one extra positive charge (or is missing an electron). A negative ion has one extra negative charge. You can create ions by rubbing two things together, like fur on a plastic rod. The outermost electrons on the atoms will get dislodged, which will create ions

4 Electrostatics TRY THIS: get a pencil or pen and rub it against your clothes. Use the pen or pencil and touch small pieces of paper or hair on the table. What happens and why?

6 A negative charge will have a negative number value. A positive charge will have a positive number value. If the charges are opposite in sign, the force will be attractive. If the charges are the same in sign, the force will be repulsive.

7 Electrostatics The fundamental charge is the smallest charge you can have of anything. Any charge on any object is multiples of the fundamental charge. The fundamental charge is the charge of the electron e = 1.6x10^(-19)C The unit for charge is Coulomb (C )

9 The units of E are Newtons/Coulomb The electric field for a charge can be drawn with field lines Positive charges have lines that go away from the center Negative charges have lines that go into the center

10 The Electric Field The Van de Graaff machine brings ions to the top at the metal dome by scraping them off the belt with a metal comb. Putting your hand on it when it starts will give you that same charge. The charge goes into your hair, making it follow electric field lines. Your hair repels each other and straightens out.

11 Examples Example 1: Object A has a positive charge of 6.0 x10^-6 C. Object B, carrying a positive charge of 3.0x10^-6 C, is 0.030 m away. a. calculate the force on A b. what would be the force if the charge on B were negative?
