1 Connotation vs. Denotation What do you associate when you think of a bumbling idiot or courageous intellectual?

2 An author will frequently use emotional language which is value-ladened (loaded) to sway opinions. These words reflect the bias of the author and can express positive or negative opinions or biases toward the subject. Sometimes these words are referred to as loaded words. Denotation. The dictionary meaning of a word. The literal meaning of a word. Connotation. The emotional or cultural meaning attached to a word. (anger, happiness, sadness)

3 What’s the Purpose? Authors intend to use these words to influence the reader. Words are powerful tools for swaying the thoughts of readers. Are you going to allow your thoughts, ideas, and opinions to be swayed by someone? Perhaps, you will learn to recognize these words and think for yourself.
