3 2014 Changes to Commission Membership Joe Freeman added two children to his family and moved out of the city requiring him to leave the commission. Steve Diebol had three additions to his household requiring him to spend more of his time at home but...

5 2014 Highlights and Initiatives Partnering with Public Works and Waste Management to convert weekly small bin recycling to bi-weekly large Cart recycling. Increasing the use of Public Services Announcements to share ideas. Institute, advertise and refine the recycling bins in the City Hall lobby. Lend-a-light LED lighting and energy saving initiative for local businesses. Electronic Recycling (eWaste) continues.

6 2014 Activities Spring E-Waste Collection Day  STATS - 26 TONS, $1,648 in donations to Fifth Corner  Largest collection in weight and $ so far  Seedlings given out for Earth Day

8 2014 Community Involvement Recycle Containers at City Hall  Battery collection is the most successful with weekly pickup of a full container plus two extra buckets per month. Cell Phone Recycling in the City Hall Lobby  Two full boxes of cell phones collected and recycled “Lend-a-Light” LED Bulb Samples for Local Businesses  3 local businesses totally converted to LED lighting  4 businesses in the process of converting Red Barrel  In 2014 the Saline Police Department collected 277 pounds of pills. Since the inception of the Big Red Barrel, the total weight of pills collected is over 482 pounds. The amount of pills collected have increase every year.

14 The Environmental Commission's Vision for 2015 Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Goals (SWOT): Strengths:  Commissioner’s depth of expertise dedication, enthusiasm, and participation  Public information and service (e-waste recycling, PSAs, website, FYI articles)  Ability to tap nearby Ann Arbor for expertise and ideas  Support from City Council Weaknesses:  Citizen apathy, lack of volunteers, lack of new members  Name recognition, coordination with other committees, no authority Opportunities:  Increase advisory group and volunteer pool – upcoming volunteer fair  Continued citizen education and outreach, sponsored events and seminars  Assertive marketing through use of social media, website, Saline Post blog  Partnering with Saline Public Schools and downtown businesses to improve commercial recycling opportunities. Threats:  Budget cuts, changes in City leadership vision for purpose of Commission  Turnover of members and ability to replace with new enthusiastic and committed volunteers

15 2015 Planned Events Spring E-Waste Collection & Seedling Distribution Volunteer Fair Information Tent  Farmer's Market  Celtic Festival  Summerfest – children’s game  Oktoberfest Dog Park landscape improvements with Parks Commission to reduce ground water runoff. Working with DPW on event recycling containers. Working with Waste Management on central business recycling containers.
