Meeting the Endorsements

 Over the past several years, several attempts have been made to ensure AVID students can remain in AVID and meet all graduation requirements ◦ Embedded Courses ◦ Summer Programs/Acceleration ◦ Innovative Schedules  Careful planning is a key element for all students. For AVID students this is especially true if they are committing to four years of AVID and trying to be involved in other programs.

 With traditional seven period days, an AVID student can easily be involved in one other activity and still have room to meet all requirements.  When a third activity is added, then more careful planning is required.  Students on eight period days or block schedules may have more options, unless programs such as fine arts or athletics are double blocked.

 Meeting the Requirements for Endorsements ◦ STEM ◦ Arts and Humanities ◦ Business and Industry ◦ Public Service ◦ Multidisciplinary  Many of the Endorsements can be met through both CTE Programs and other academic measures.  These model plans can show multiple examples.

 Important Note: ◦ Speech credit and health credit is a local decision. These may not be required in all districts. ◦ The state is allowing a combination of world history and world geography. While this option is allowed, the basic 4x4 sequence is highly recommended as it not only meets requirements for the Multidisciplinary Endorsement, it also meets most college entrance requirements.

Careful Planning is Key

 These examples are meant to serve as guides. Each individual district may have additional requirements to consider.  Many of the ideas in the 7 period examples and 8 Period examples are interchangeable. For example the double blocked athletics and fine arts could fit easily in the 7 period model, by simply removing the double block.  Summer school for Health, PE, Fine Arts, and Foreign language may open additional spots.

 Summer school for Health, PE, Fine Arts, and Foreign language may open additional spots. Also, using high school credits earned in middle school.  Out of the traditional school day options such as correspondence courses, college classes after school hours, and night school can open even more room.

Creative scheduling and planning can allow that to happen
