3 Lay your pieces of paper like the following diagram:

4 Fold the Bottom up so that you have two gold rows in the middle.

9 1 st Amendment: >> Protects five basic freedoms which are the cornerstone of our democracy. >> Because of them, we can develop our own beliefs, express ourselves freely, meet openly with others, and have our own views on public matters heard by those who govern. >>Freedom of religion >>Freedom of speech >>Freedom of the press >>Freedom of assembly >>Freedom to petition

10 >> Freedom of Religion: -Congress can not establish an official religion in the United States -Americans can practice any religion they choose - Government can not favor one religion over another or treat people different because of their beliefs.

12 >>Freedom of Speech: - Americans can say what is on our minds-in public or private- without fear of punishment by government - Face to face, telephone, lectures, radio and TV, internet, art, music, clothing

14 >>Freedom of the Press: -Americans can express themselves in print as well as speech - Books, newspapers, magazines, and today, radio, television, and computer networks - Ensures Americans will be exposed to a wide variety of viewpoints - Government can not censor

16 >>Freedom of Assembly: -Americans can gather in groups for any reason (as long as they are peaceful!) - We have the right to attend meetings, parades, political rallies, and public celebrations. - Americans can also have the right to form and join any social clubs, political parties, labor unions, and other organizations

18 >>Freedom to Petition: -Americans have the right to petition the government - Americans can express one’s ideas to the government

20 There are limits?? YES!!! You must be careful with what you say and do. You have these rights as long as you do not harm others or the government!!

21 2 nd Amendment: -Americans have the right to bear arms without the interference of the government -Government can pass laws to control but not prevent the possession of weapons.

22 3 rd Amendment: -Americans will not be forced to shelter militia -In peace time, soldiers may not move into private homes without the consent of the homeowner. -During war, Congress must okay this

23 4 th Amendment: -No solider, government agent, or police officer can search your home or take your property without good cause -No unreasonable search or seizure!! -Judges must issue a search warrant (and only do when the search will turn up evidence of criminal activity)

24 5 th Amendment: -Protects the rights of the accused -Fair trial (indictment first) -No double jeopardy (accused of the same crime twice) - Can remain silent (plead the 5 th ) -Due Process- must follow legal procedures -Eminent Domain

25 6 th Amendment: -Americans have the right to know what charges are against them - Fair trial by jury >>Speedy and public >>Same district where crime occurred -Can question witnesses -Entitled to lawyer

26 7 th Amendment: -Americans have the right to a jury trial in civil cases if amount of money is more than $20 -civil case=case between people rather than crime

27 8 th Amendment: -Sometimes a speedy trial does take longer than anticipated if that happens… -Americans have the right to stay in jail or pay bail -Some crimes and cases do not permit bail -Protected against cruel and unusual punishment

28 9 th Amendment: -Americans have rights that can’t be taken away -Right to Privacy (home, financially, and medically)

29 10 th Amendment: -Any powers not given to the national government in the Constitution, the state can do
