1 THE DEBATE “The 2012 Olympics in London is a waste of taxpayer’s money and will only benefit those who live in London”

2 Transport Railway lines, trains and stations are being upgraded to cope with the thousands of participants, volunteers and spectators who will travel to the Games each day. Ten lines, most of which are being upgraded, currently serve the Olympic Park area. The waterways connecting the River Lea to the River Thames will be improved to enable them to be used during construction to allow materials to be transported to and from the site by 350 tonne barge. A network of cycle lanes and walking routes will be developed, connecting the Park and other venues into the wider London networks.

3 They’re separating 500 tonnes of waste into piles of different metals, concrete, and other materials, much of which will be reused on the site or recycled elsewhere. All of this waste is found at the Olympic village. The Park is located in the Lower Lea Valley - an area of great untapped potential. 4 With more than 100,000 hotel rooms to choose from, every visitor to London will be able to find a warm welcome during the Games. Most hotels are concentrated in the heart of the West End, making it easy to explore London's shops, restaurants and theatres on foot. Excellent transport links will make it easy for visitors staying in central London to get to the 2012 venues. Halls of residence and other student accommodation will provide a further 30,000 beds, offering a comfortable and affordable alternative for visitors on a budget. A home stay programme for athletes' families will offer visitors an insight into everyday life in the capital. And London's incredible diversity will ensure that every visitor will feel at home, whatever their culture, faith or language. Accommodation

5 The Olympic committee are: designing buildings to use less energy; using lower carbon alternatives; building a wind turbine; and selecting materials that require less energy to produce them. This will cost less on electricity and also help the environment. money
