6 New York: Founder New York began as the Dutch colony of New Netherland In 1664, King Charles II granted the right to all Dutch lands in N. America to his brother James, the Duke of York James claimed and conquered the land for England and it was renamed New York after James

7 New York: Reason for founding Because England and the Netherlands were at war in Europe, England wanted to control the Dutch lands in N. America for economic gain Power struggle

8 New York: People in the Colony British settlers Dutch settlers English Puritans Indentured Servants African Slaves Native American tribes in the region

9 New York: Climate and Geography Hot, humid summers Cold, snowy winters Swampy terrain near the coast Inland was forested Fertile farm land inland

10 New York: Economy $$$$ Fur trapping, lumber, shipping, slave trade Large farms produced wheat, veggies, and tobacco Mined Iron

11 New York: Religion New York was sandwiched between Puritan New England colonies and the Catholic colony of Maryland So the settlers in NY were of many faiths with fair religious freedom

12 New York: Politics and Government New York was a royal colony—controlled by the English King So the colony was run by a governor appointed by the King (to be his eyes and ears) He made all the laws and there was little to no self- government

16 Pennsylvania: Reason Penn was stoked to get the land grant He took the opportunity like Calvert to set up a religiously free colony Made PN a heaven for people being persecuted

17 PN: People British settlers Quaker settlers Other persecuted people including Lutherans, Mennonites, Amish, Moravians, Presbyterians, Huguenots, and Jews Few slaves, Quakers looked down on the ownership of slaves. Only about 20% were enslaved Africans

18 PN: Climate and geography Forested, rolling hills covered the colony Fertile soil Hot, humid summer with cold, snowy winters The colony of Delaware used to be part of Pennsylvania.

20 PN: Religion Strong religious tolerance Welcomed settlers seeking religious freedom Penn even named the capital, Philadelphia the “City of Brotherly Love.” Quaker faith projected the values of honesty, integrity, purity, equality and strength.

21 PN: Politics Penn wrote the Frame of Government, it created an elected assembly Self government Governor oversaw an assembly of 72 elected men
