1 MULTICULTURAL SOCIAL WORK AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATIVE AND ANTI-OPRESSIVE PRACTICES Miroslav Brkić

2 COURSE OBJECTIVE Analysis of the specific characteristic of different types of discrimination and social policy measures. Acquisition of knowledge and skills about concepts, policies, programs and methods of combating multicultural, anti- discriminatory and anti-oppressive practices.

3 COURSE OUTCOMES Understanding the nature of prejudice and discrimination effects of various vulnerable groups and individuals. Acquisition of knowledge on theoretical concepts of multicultural practice, modern anti-discrimination approaches in national, European and global context. Development of competencies and critical thinking about anti- discriminative issues.

4 COURSE CONTENT Theoretical classes:  Different theories, lobbying and activism in promoting equality.  Work with different marginalized groups: Roma population, LBGT, psychiatric patients, homeless.  De-institutionalization and inclusion people with intellectual disability and psychiatric illness.  Practical teaching: Exercises, research work, case studies, work in small group, discussion groups, etc..

5 KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING Knowledge of: the theoretical framework, principles, values and concepts of multicultural social work practice, the history and causes of discrimination, national and international anti-discriminative approaches and policy programs. Understanding of: The nature of prejudices and effects of the discrimination, the effects, causes, consequences of discrimination and oppression, the social work profession’s responsibility and commitment to social reform, advocacy, and social justice in light of the existence of oppression

6 APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE Students should be able to apply their knowledge in the following ways:  Advance human rights, designing cultural-sensitive programmes and practice, advocate and empowerment of the marginalized users groups, to develop increasing awareness and skill in identifying institutional and personal oppression

7 ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS Students should demonstrate the following skills of analysis and synthesis:  To adapt evidence-based practices for the cultural groups they serve, skill of analysis and synthesis of different social policy measures and types of discrimination.  Skills of analyses and synthesis of challenges and problems in social integration of various disadvantaged groups.  Analysis of personal values

8 EVALUATION Students should demonstrate the following skills:  Evaluation of evidence of discriminative policies in cross-cultural perspective and discriminative national policy in different field.  Monitoring and evaluation of anti-discriminative polices in national, European and international context and impact of social interventions.  Designing recommendation for improving the status of discriminated and oppressed groups in society and policy formulation
