TYPES OF NARRATOR
2
► The narrator is the person that the writer uses to tell the story. ► Different narrators have different effects. ► We will look at: 1 st person narrator, 3 rd person narrator and an omniscient narrator.
3
1 st PERSON NARRATOR ► This is when the story is told from the narrator’s point of view. ► EG – I walked down the hall and knocked on the door. ► This is useful if you want the reader to understand what the character is thinking.
4
3 RD PERSON NARRATOR ► This is when the story is told from an onlooker’s point of view; it is not happening to them. ► EG – She walked down the hall and knocked on the door. ► It is less biased than 1 st person narration. ► We don’t know what a character is feeling.
5
OMNISCIENT NARRATOR ► This type of narrator can both see and tell what is happening and give the thoughts of different characters. ► EG – She walked down the hall and wondered who would answer when she knocked on the door.
6
TASK: WRITE DOWN WHICH TYPE OF NARRATOR IS BEING USED IN THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES. 1. Lucy walked to the phone and picked it up. 2. Danny wondered if Kim really believed him. 3. I thought a lot about what he said.
