Joe Kimaili State of UbuntuNet

The regional Research and Education Network of Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) region NRENs from 15 countries  TERNET, Tanzania  Eb@le, DRC  EthERNet, Ethiopia  iRENALA, Madagascar  KENET, Kenya  MAREN, Malawi  MoRENet, Mozambique  XNet, Namibia  RwEdNet, Rwanda  SomaliREN, Somalia  SudREN, Sudan  TENET, South Africa  RENU, Uganda  ZAMREN, Zambia  BERNET, Burundi  Operates UbuntuNet, the data network interconnecting member NRENs What is Ubuntunet Alliance?

State of UbuntuNet (the network) 10 POPs in total  8 in Alliance region  2 in Europe (London and Amsterdam) 2.18Gbps capacity between Africa PoPs and European PoPs  2 links on the eastern coast [ 2 x STM-4]  2 links along the west coast [ 1xSTM-4 + 2xSTM-1] Backbone covering 7 countries in Alliance region  1xSTM-4 from Dar es salaam to Cape Town via Lusaka  2xSTM-4 along the Eastern seaboard  2xSTM-4 from Nairobi to Kampala  1xSTM-4 from Kampala to Kigali  1xSTM-1 to Moanda(DRC) from Cape Town  1xSTM-4 from Nairobi to Cape Town (temp)

State of UbuntuNet (the network) 4 NRENs connected directly to European PoPs (on own links)  TENET – 3 x STM-64  KENET-1xSTM-16 + 3 x STM-4 + 1xSTM-1  TERNET -1xSTM-1  MoRENet-1xSTM-1 Peering with and transit through GEANT in London and Amsterdam  R&E traffic Peering and transit at LINX and AMS-IX  Commodity Internet Peering at NAPAfrica  Commodity Internet Most of the links procured under AfricaConnet 1 New links to be provisioned under AfricaConnect 2

AfricaConnect2 follows the success of the AfricaConnect project which contributed to the creation of the UbuntuNet, the high-speed R&E network for Eastern and Southern Africa, between 2011 and 2015. It also builds on the achievements of the EumedConnect project in Northern Africa and will extend connectivity into West and Central Africa. AfricaConnect2 builds advanced internet networks for research and education (R&E) across the entire African continent and connects them to other world regions via the pan-European GÉANT network. This allows African students, researchers and academics to collaborate with their peers all over the world and will firmly place Africa on the global map for research and education. 5 Capacity upgrades – AfricaConnect2

Capacity upgrades 2015/2016 (Under AfricaConnect2) Procurement to provide more capacity and network resilience for RENU (Uganda) and RwEdNet (Rwanda), as well as connect TERNET to SEACOM landing station at Silver sands (STM-4) (Complete)  on different infrastructure from the existing link  Proposed path in was through Tanzania was Mutukula  Rusumo for link from Kampala to Kigali, and Mutukula  Dar es salaam for Link from Kampala to Dar es salaam Link from UbuntuNet to Blantyre, Malawi  Will require upgrades of the link from Dar es salaam to Cape Town via Lusaka Link from Dar es salaam to Mogadishu to serve SOMALIREN ( 2xSTM- 1) Upgrade the “wet-backbone” to cater for increased demand. Link from Mtunzini to Cape Town Connection to any other NREN that may be ready before the end of the year
