EDU650: Teaching Learning and Leading in the 21st Century (NMA1541A) By Laura Logan By Laura Logan

Good evening everyone, my name is Laura Logan. My husband retired from the Army, and I have been associated with the military for the past forty years and have two children serving in the military. I have been working as a substitute teacher for four years at Fort Campbell school district and will graduate in January with a degree in Education Studies. I attended public school in Panama City, Panama, and I am Hispanic and can speak and write Spanish. I want to become an educator teaching Spanish in the middle or at the elementary school level.

My educational philosophy is that all children can learn, not all at the same pace and with different learning styles. I believe to be a successful educator you must love children and have plenty of patience. I believe students learn best when they or the teacher identify their learning style and the educator understand that all students learn at a different pace.

Classroom management is the most important strategy an educator can have to achieve academic success in the classroom. The educator that has good classroom management means the students are in a safe environment, and learning environment is conducive to learning. According to Newman (2013), classroom management is the set of procedures and systems that are put in place to create an environment that focuses on student learning. Classroom management involves teacher decisions and actions intended to create an environment conducive to learning (p. 85).

The two schools I will compare are two middle schools (grades 6-8) located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky where I have substituted at both schools. The main problem that affected both schools is the deployment of the student’s parents. The schools are located on a military base; one school mostly serves the officers and high-ranking enlisted children while the other school serves mostly the lower ranking enlisted children. A teacher who work at both schools stated that the school with mostly officers and high-ranking enlisted soldiers had more resources than the other school that had mostly lower ranking enlisted soldiers available for the students and teachers.

The idea of the backward design is for the teacher to determine the expected outcome of the students after the lesson, chapter, or unit is completed. The teacher should have a clear idea of what the learning objective is and what the students should be able to do, understand, and care about as a result of learning (San Diego County Office of Education n. d) According to Newman (2013), The backward design process has three stages, identify the desired results, determine the acceptable evidence, and planning learning experiences and instruction (p. 236).

The The job of the student is to learn how they learn best and to become life long learners. According to Newnan (2013), “problem-based learning (PBL) offers students the opportunity to learn by solving a problem” (p. 17). According to Soric (2009), “self-regulated learning is the students’ ability to select, coordinate learning strategies. Learning strategies involved selecting and organizing information, rehearsing learning material, relating new information to information in memory” (p. 548)

Assessments tools are used in schools across the country are to tell a significant story or begin describing a comprehensive representation of the student academic achievement. Successful evaluation is critical in the development of improving any school district. Assessment and evaluations is key in measuring the progress of a student’s learning. Assessments of the student’s learning will show the quality of the education being provided. and it takes the student evaluations and assessments to reveal whether they should continue in that direction.

According to Learningforward (n. d.), professional learning within communities requires continuous improvement, promotes collective responsibility, and supports alignment of individual, team, school, and school system goals. One of my short-term goals is about to come true, and that is to graduate with a BA in Education Studies Specialization: Early Childhood Education from Ashford in January A goal of mine is to get certified in education at the middle or elementary school level so I can teach Spanish
