Common Core Presentation Sharelius Holmes Week 2: Discussion 2 Dr. Sherry Leialoha-Waipa

Purpose of the Common Core A set of practices adopted by the United States educational system that places emphasis on Math, English, and Science. Recently, placing focus on the inclusion of technology for students grade level K-12. The curriculum was established to give teachers the ability to use their own methods of instructions to design their lessons. Enrich the minds of students to place them on the same level of their peers internationally. Guide teachers so they can teach the appropriate materials needed to progress from grade level to grade level.

CCSS in the School System The Common Core State Standards are used in the school system to help students achieve academic success in school. Teachers can develop meaningful lessons that match the expectations of what each student should know prior to entering the next grade level.

Continuation of CCSS in Schools Teachers align lessons in English, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Visual and performing arts, Health, and Physical education that prepare them for college, career, and the world. The standards in the school systems connects students using real-world experiences.

Importance of the Standards Common Core State Standards are important in our schools systems. According to Wardle our schools are at risk, “A Nation at Risk as regards to American students compared to other countries” (Wardle, 2013, Para 2). The fact that Wardle attempts to prove is that our educational system is behind other countries educational system. President George W. Bush signed “The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 in his education-reform bill. This educational act aims to increase the role that the federal government plays in the public education of children in the U.S.

Teachers are Important Teachers in unity can break the many barriers that young children face in the classrooms. Currently, teachers wear a number of hats in our educational system. Reflecting on President Barak Obama speech in regards to improving the educational system, “And I’m calling on our nation’s governor and state education chiefs to develop standards and assessments that don’t simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21 st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity” (Puckett, 2013, Para 1). With this being said, the educational system has changed drastically forcing teachers to think creatively. Educational barriers flourish in classrooms with undetermined outcomes. One thing is for certain is that collaboration may be the key to unlock those shut doors.

Justification of Report Cards  Inform parents of their child academic progress in school.  Provide information about school and student performance.  Offers the chance for improvement on academic success in school.  Shows students growth over a period of time.

Assessment Guiding teacher and Learners The teacher Assessments offers the gives the chance to enhance their teaching practices if necessary. Teachers are able to be creative in the way they teach students. Moreover, through assessments the teacher can provide feedback and provide students with written or verbal comments. The teacher will be able to sit down with parents and provide information about their child with the ability to formulate a plan for improvement or either praise the child on their accomplishment, and create more challenging lessons. The Students Assessments for the students is a collection of data that provides evidence of the students learning ability. It is more than tests and assessments gives the teacher the opportunity to continue a lesson if needed for the students. The students will see if they have mastered a particular subject or need more time in a particular lesson. Students get the chance through assessments to meet their target goals or to improve them. Assessments offers meaningful experiences for students to learn in an innovative way.
