2. The Civil War Facts The Civil War was from 1861-1865 The average soldier in the Civil War was between 18 and 39 with the average age under 26 years old. Some children want to enlist but were not old enough They would put rocks in their shoes to make them look older and lie about their ages Many children would enlist that were underage They were paid an average of $11.00 per month

7. Jonny Clem One young soldier was Jonny Clem. Born August 13, 1851 and died May 13, 1937 At 9 years, (1860) old he saw a regiment come through his town and immedieately wanted to join the Army He ran away at 10,(1861)years old to join the Confederate Army

8. Jonny Clem (cont) He became a drummer boy and mascot with the 22 nd Massachusett regiment but was not payed officially because he was underage. The other soldiers help chip in to pay his salary. He was officially enlisted in the Army when he turned 12, (1863) years old. By 12 years old, he had already participated in many battles.
