A Measured Approach to Virtualization Don Mendonsa Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory NLIT 2008 by LLNL-PRES-403406

Agenda  Approaches to Virtualizing  Why Virtualize  Getting Started  Virtualization Products  Defining your Scope  Choosing a Product  Evaluate your Environment  Sizing your Virtual Environment  Sample Architecture  Implementation Plan  Operational Considerations  Summary

LLNL-PRES-403406 Approaches to Virtualizing  Shotgun approach  Discredit the technology  Discredit person or group implementing it  Gradual approach  Most common approach  High potential for long term problems  Measured approach  Methodical  Project well planned  Processes well defined

LLNL-PRES-403406 Why Virtualize  Utility of Hardware — Server utilization, high percentage of current hardware idle time  Green Computing — Reduced power, cooling and hardware costs  Business Agility — Time to test and production  Service Availability — Make critical services highly available  Development Environment — Isolated development  Fault Isolation — Duplicate and isolate problems in production environments

LLNL-PRES-403406 Why Virtualize (cont.)  Business Continuity — Disaster Recovery, utilizing snap shot techniques  Efficiency of System Management — Centrally manage all computing resources  Return on Investment — Virtualization vendors often have an ROI calculator

LLNL-PRES-403406 Getting Started Linear Tasks Evaluate Products Define Scope Product Selection Implementation Plan Size your Virtual Hardware Operational Procedures Analyze Environment

LLNL-PRES-403406 Virtualization Products  VMWare — ESX Server  Citrix — XEN Server  Microsoft — Hyper-V Evaluate:  Product Offerings  Key benefits

LLNL-PRES-403406 VMWare VMWare offers a full suite of products for virtualizing your environment. Product offerings are in three categories: 1. Virtualization Platform 2. Infrastructure Products 3. Management Software

LLNL-PRES-403406 VMWare (cont.) Virtualization Platform:  ESX — Presentation server, hosts virtual machines and provides access to server hardware  VMFS — Virtual File system allowing multiple hosting servers access to the file storage simultaneously  VMSMP — Virtual symmetrical multiprocessing - Use up to four physical processors for enterprise CPU intensive applications

LLNL-PRES-403406 VMWare (cont.) Infrastructure Products:  VMotion — Utility to move virtual machines (VMs) from one host server to another  Storage VMotion — Utility to move VM files from one storage to another  High Availability — Utility to monitor server availability and move and restart VMs on other servers as needed  Consolidated Backup — Integrates into existing backup infrastructures and manages VMs  Update Manager — Keeps ESX server patched and some host Windows system patched

LLNL-PRES-403406 VMWare (cont.) Management Software:  Virtual Center — Utility to manage entire virtual enterprise  Capacity Planner — Tool to properly size the host hardware you will need based from your analysis and production needs  Converter — Tool that converts actual server to a virtual server

LLNL-PRES-403406 Citrix Citrix offers a full suite of products from back end application servers to the desktop through Citrix Delivery Center. Virtualization products are as follows:  Xen Server — Virtual machine hosting software  Xen Enterprise — Software to manage virtual environment  Xen Motion — Tool included with Xen Enterprise to move VMs between Xen servers NOTE: Citrix partners offers many complimentary virtualization tools to enhance your deployment

LLNL-PRES-403406 Microsoft Microsoft’s virtualization solution is Hyper-V. It comes with Server 2008 and is free. Features include the following:  Hyper-V — Virtual machine hosting software  High Availability — Supported in a cluster configuration for high availability  Server Manager Integration — Included in Server 2008  Live Backup — Takes snapshots of VMs in real time for disaster recovery  VM Manageability — Allows import and export of VM settings

LLNL-PRES-403406 Defining your Scope  Virtualize some or all servers  Virtualize some or all desktops  Make all critical services highly available  Enhance business continuity  Control development environment  Centrally manage computing resources

LLNL-PRES-403406 Product Selection  Decision criteria matrix RequirementXX XX XX VMWare Citrix Microsoft  Choose the product that meets your needs

LLNL-PRES-403406 Evaluate your Environment  Identify potential servers to virtualize by gathering:  Processor speeds  Total RAM  Storage requirements  Employ analytical tools to run on the servers for 30 days gathering data  Virtualization vendors or partners offer professional services  Other integrators, like Convergent Computing, also offer the service

LLNL-PRES-403406 Sizing your Virtual Environment  Employ sizing tools to determine what hardware will be needed  Virtualization vendors often provide a sizing tool  Professional services  Other third party tools  Online tools

LLNL-PRES-403406 Sample Architecture Storage Network Servers Virtual Machines

LLNL-PRES-403406 Sample Architecture (cont.) Dell R900 68 Gig RAM 2 Quad Core Procs Low — Server that minimally taxes host hardware Mid — Server that moderately taxes host hardware

LLNL-PRES-403406 Implementation Plan MONTH 1MONTH 2MONTH 3MONTH 4 Acquire Resources Pilot Period Migration of Servers New Operations Test and Dev 2008 100% completed Phase 1Phase 2Phase 3Phase 4Phase 5

LLNL-PRES-403406 Operational Considerations  Development of new operational procedures  How server maintenance, updating and patching are done  Provisioning of new servers — templates  Operations of development environment  Bare metal migrations from existing servers  Backups or snapshots for disaster recovery  Decommissioning of servers that have been virtualized

LLNL-PRES-403406 Summary  Decide if virtualization will benefit your organization  Evaluate the products and offerings  Define your scope/requirements  Analyze and size your environment  Implement and move into production
