1 It’s SOL time… Mrs. D’s tips for doing your best!

2 Classes from now to SOL day ► I will aim to give you a chunk of time at the end of class (10-15 minutes) to work on this SOL review. ► Each day, you are expected to work (and NOT pack up!) until the final 2 minutes of class.

3 How to study: DO… ► Your review packet.  On your own.  Using the old textbook and notes.  Pace yourself over the four, 30-minute chunks of time in class ► Practice tests online.  3 J-lab’s due the class period before interims  Do them weekly for practice and review! ► Look over the blueprints for the Standards o. L.  http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/science/ ► Ask Mrs. D for help with specific questions you’re stumped on.

4 How to study: DON’T… ► Copy a friend’s review packet. ► Procrastinate until the night before the test. ► Re-read the entire textbook. ► Expect Mrs. D to re-teach everything.

5 How to prepare: DO… ► Get good sleep every night for 3 days before the test. ► Eat a good breakfast.  Bring water/small snack to the test. ► Take time to relax a little each night.  Do something fun to de-stress  You’ll sleep better.  Reward yourself for studying. ► Dress comfortably and arrive early for the test.

6 How to prepare: DON’T… ► Consume lots of caffeine, etc. ► Freak out.  Stress makes the logic part of your brain shut down.  One of the SOL topics is logic and reasoning. ► Cram. ► Distract your friends from doing their best.

7 During the Test: DO… ► Read the question.  Understand the question before answering. ► Read all options.  Eliminate wrong options. ► Easy questions first.  Harder questions last. ► Use pictures/graphs. ► If you don’t have a clue about the answer, think about what you DO know… it might jog your memory.

8 During the Test: DON’T… ► Rush. ► Sleep. ► Distract others. ► Cheat. ► Expect “extra time” for procrastinating.  You won’t get extra time if you’re lazy. ► Use the computer when you’re finished.  The network slows down too much. ► Change your answer – unless you are 100% sure it was wrong the first time!
